The decks wore very artis tically decorated with (lags, etc. Few of the stewards and stew ardesses on tho steamer spoke English at all. Some of us who have no knowledge of German had a most amusing time making our desires known to them. Some of the motions, contortions etc., were positively ludicrous. The menus too were all printed in German; so in offering our meals, we went through a regu lar grab-bag performance which was most novel and interesting. We never knew exactly what we might draw. On the Kaiser Wil helm II. I had my initation in the practice of drinking afternoon tea; since I've become quite well acquainted with it It's quite the custom here in the East On the morning of the 25th we came to the harbor of Cherbourg. While it was good to see land again, we were sorry that the At lantic voyage was over. Cher bourg as approached from the Channel is most interesting from a military standpoint Its forti fications are the strongest in the northeastern part of France. Then again it is quite picturesque with its long lines of brownstone fortifications extending far out into the sea. In the background on a high bluff is a fortified cas tle. A number of battleships French, of course, were anchor ed iu the harbor; and really, they were the only objects to mar the picture such dark, homely af fairs as they are. Immediately upon landing, our hand-baggage was examiued by the custom of ficersmerely a question of form then we started off for Paris. The ride was a very pleasant one, the scenery pretty, and towns very quaint and curious, most of them. The 29th and 30th we had in Paris; and, of course, we sought to devour everything we could with our eyes in that time. It was ever so much sport doing the stores. Au Bon Marche, the Louvre Magazine, and a number of others. It made a little brain work to "parler Francais"enough to be understood, and keep the French money straight at the time, during the two afternoons we spent in the Louvre. That was only enough to make one yearn for more. The paintings and sculptures of the masters are so grand, one needs ocean s of time to study them. We were so fortunate as to be at the Notre Dame during a service in the choir. The chanting and organ music was simply beautiful fact is, beautiful must be applied to Notre Dame throughout. It is simply grand. One cannot imag ne anything ' more beautiful in color than the stained glass form ing the rose-windows,, and the beautiful light thrown by them over tbe wnole interior. The Luxembourg Pantheon, church of St Etienne, we visited also, all of which are of great interest. At 7:80, on tbe 80th, we left Paris for Marseilles, getting in at 10:30 on Oct 1st The ride from 6 A. M., on was beautiful. We saw the olive groves for the first time; also tho arms of the Mediterranean and the many hills rising from the sea. On the highest of them out in the sea, is a Sailor' s church, with a large statue of "Notre Dame" on the top. The sailors go there to of fer prayers when they are about to start on a voyage. They, .also, carry small pitchers with them as offerings. The walls are tilled with these, of all sorts and con ditions, sizes and shapes. Arriv ing in Marseilles, we went di rectly to L'Hotel de Geneva, to wait until 4 P. M., when our steamer will sail. Wanted. 5000 Chlcnens and Turkeys. Will pay highest market price in cash.
