THURSDAY AUGUSI I - Edward Payson Weston, aged 70, ! strolled into San Francisco at 1' ! o'clock last Wednesday night, hav ing accomplished his 4,000 mil: walk across the continent in 105 <lny ! not counting Sundays, when he tool: I his rest. Tired though he was phy ' sicians declared that the sturdy sep | tuagenarian had sustained no in jury from his extended ordeal and j could, if necessary repeat the feat. ; Weston is reported to be worrying over the fact that li*-* /ailed t< | complete his walk in looda.\s, a.-, he had planned, but tlis triumi»ti i is practically as great as though h> had realized his intention. At least none of his critics will contract to equal or excel his achievement which will doubtless stand for some time as the record in it- 1 tield of en ; deavor. Naturally the question is being I asked: what good will result from Weston's feat? Persons who measure all achievements by theirs dollar ; and cents value will exhibit little en ! thusiasm over the plucky old nth 1 lete, but there are plenty of other who will applaud his grit. In thes< days when some folk think then is] danger of walking becoming one oi' I the lost arts, an example like West lon's is inspiring. Weston aver igeo > :;s miles a day, but he did not pause along the way to pick (lowers and ' admire the scenery. No doubt the greater enjoyment comes from lei- ; -urely jaunts. Weston possesses an j exceptional physique, and few per- j sons, with advantage to thenisclve, | could attempt to equal bis perform ances. While he sets the pace, th"re are rich benefits in store for those ! who follow him at a distance. Walk ing may be carried to excess, but in moderation it is the best of all forms of exercise." It is proposed to build a state road from the Susquehanna county line to to the Luzerne county line, thus join ing the two counties with a fine' highway. The I'nitedStatcs Post Hire depart ment has decided to discontinue the ! new green special delivery and re turn lo the familiar blue stamp showing a special delivery messen ger boy mounted on a bicycle. As the new stamp is so similar tot ie one-cent stamp in size as well as col or very often it did not receive the proper attention causing much em-i barresment to the department and loss to the public. Be natural do not try to impress people with your importance. If you are really important they will iiud it out. If you are of no account i you will not deceive any one by act- 1 ing as though great interests rested j in your keeping. The day of ]>DIH- posity is past, we hope never tore- j turn. More people than ever be-1 fore are intelligent and able to judge : you and place a true rather than a false estimate on vour abilities. Base Ball Lilc at the Covnty Capitol. Two tine games of ball were play ed on the athletic grounds since our , last issue. On Saturday a fine team j < from Estella defeated our home team by the score of 7to (5. The absence ' of Lorah, regular catcher for Laporte A. A. pro veil disastrous, but the game was a good one. On Tuesday the crack team of ; St. Joseph's Seminary at William sport, visited Laporte and the most interesting game of the season £re- j suited. The L. A. A. strengthened i by Mercer and Cunningham proved j to I>e the slightly better team, win ning by the score of 5 to 3. Sulliv an, pitcher for St. Josephs, and Carpenter, for Laporte each struck , out 14 men. But nine clean bits| were made, four off Carpenter and five off Sullivan. Pennock made the winning hit with a two bagger which drove in two runs. It is a sad fact to record but at each of these games the Athletic Association lost money. This As sociation has provided a fine ground and has given the town real base ball, but they are not supported by , the people. From the stand point pride alone these games, should be better attended and we hope this suggestion will be acted ' upon for the remainder of the sea < son. I Sep;* mber Tern Jursrs.
