E. church last Sunday evening, and was very good—music,^speeches,rec itations, decorations and the goueral effect produced by tha electric lights. Miss Myrtle Edgar is again home after eight months spent in Wash ington, D. C. On her return trip she visited friends in Baltimore, Ifarrisburg aud Willianisport. Mr. and Mrs. B. G. Welsh have sub-rented of E. J. Loekwood, and have gone to housekoeying in a very cosy manner in the Jacob Lorah House. 11. D. Loekwood and A. L. Sheets were fishing at Hunters Lake Tues day. Roth returned with well stock ed baskets. Ed Houseknecht was taken very ill shortly after leaving homo Mon day morning. Dr. Voorhees \un summoned ami he was soon able to be taken to his home. Walter Ilazen expects to leave for Eagles Mere Friday. Born to Mr. and Mrs. J. C. Starr, May 23, a son. Mrs. John Converse is on the sick list. Memorial services were held here on Monday. The address was made by Rev. E. R. Dunn of Danville, a former pastor of this place. He was a very welcome visitor hero. His address was well given and enjoyed by all present. Misses Pearl Ellison and Josie Fritz with their brothers were re cent guests of Miss Iteba Hess. Mr. and Mrs. 11. P. Hall and Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Loekwood drove to Orangeville on Tuesday, returning the next day. Mr. Loekwood has joined the Masons and took his third degree. Misses Martha and Clara Streby of Dushore, were in town Friday enroute to Eagles Mere. Bad weather kept many at home from the festival Monday night. Nevertheless, the crowd was a hap py, generous one, that fully appreci ated the excellent things provided by the P. O. 8. of A. HILLSGROVE. F. B. Thrall of Willianisport visit ed at W. L. MEMORIAL HONORS FOR THE NATION'S DEAD. But Three Members ol G. A. R. Participate in Services. Memorial Day at Laporte was ob served with a devotion and fervor befitting the occasion. Eloquent tributes in patriotic speeches im pressive music and beautiful gar lands of flowers banked around the graves of the departed soldiers dem onstrated the love and respect held for the Grand Army of flic Repub lic which is fast losing in numbers as the years go by. The program as prepared by the three surviving members at this place, was carried out with success, and a large gathering at the Court House participated in the services. Rev. E- A. lleiin made an eloquent address, which was followed by Ellery I*. Ingham who paid a glow ing tribute to the patriotic bravery and self-sacrifice of the men who had volunteered to uphold the sanc tity of the Union. One of the im pressive features of the services was the stirring address of Abraham Lincoln delivered at Gettysburg, read by Mi:.s Mable Pennington. The music by the choir and quar tettes was much appreciated, and all who had the privelege of attending the services had nothing but words of praise for those whoso ably as sisted in the observance of the day. j The rain in the afternoon made inarching and the services at the graves disagreeable, but notwith standing this the program was car ried out in its entirety. Sen reman of Dushore is visiting her daughter. Mrs. H. M. K el log. LEAVING TOWN WITHOUT PAYING BILLS FOR BOARD AND OTHEft DEBTS. Captured and Brought Back to Bid Dis. appointed Friends Good-By. Much interest was centered on a case brought before 'Squire Keeler Tuesday in which N'icl Roach and Henry Cashat were arrainged for showing a disposition in making an attempt to escape paying a hoard hill al Hit; Laportc Hotel and other debts contracted at the stores of A. 11. Ruschausen and Jacob Ilerr, along with large sums of money bor rowed from new acquaintances at this place. The two men have been employed at the Laportc stave miil for the past two months. .Mr. Roach was a stave cutter who drew large wages and boarded al the Laportc Hotel with bis wife. They were a very genial and pleasant young cou ple who won the confidence and es teem of all who met them, and so kindly and considerately were they naturally received here that it be came an easy matter for them to get all the credit they could wish for. Last week Mrs. Roach left for a vis it with friends at Cross Fork, taking all her personal effects with her. The stave mill not being in opera tion on Memorial Day, the Messrs. I loach and Cashat grew restless, it is i supposed, and started to walk to Dushorc, F. \V. Gallagher growing suspicious of their sudden departure from the place sent notices through out the county for their arrest. Frank Ruck of Dushorc took them into custody before they had time to leave that place after they arrived there. Constable James Gansel, armed with warrants went to bring them back to say good-bye to their friends before leaving. At the hear ing th" men pleaded to In- released until the return of Mr. Marcus, fore man of the stave mill, who was out of town in search of experienced men to take their places, believing that he would re-hire them, thus giving them an opportunity to earn sufficient means to liqud'ite their several outstanding accounts. Each was placed under $?>00 bail for their appearance before Squire Keeler the following evening. Mr. Roach's friendly appeal to Mr. Gallagher aroused the sympathies of that gen tleman sufficiently to secure him for bail, saving Mr. Roach the humilia tion of going to jail. Mr. Cashat was given to Sheriff Cott for safe keeping until Wednesday evening. AM, A l AKC'K. Before the time for hearing had come, the boys got sobered up and convinced their excited creditors that they were just out of town for a good time and was ready to start back when sent for. Mr.Marcus had their places open to them,and they went to work Thursday morning. RICKETTS. \ Several parties from here visited Ganoga Falls this week. The nat ural scenery is very beautiful at that ! place. Mr. \V. A. Herringtou who was called to Burlington by the death of his grandfather, has returned. Mr. A. Mr. Ray Zaner was a Dushorc j visitor over Sunday. The warm weather assisted by j frequent showers is making the gar- I dens look better. I George Molyneux, only son of Mr. and Mrs. C. X. Molyneux of \ Picture Rocks, died Saturday, May ij 1, at Coke, Venango county, aged j2O years, 2 months and I days. The remains were brought to his parent's home, and interment was made at Pleasant Hill cemetery. Six cousins of the deceased acted as pall heart rs. 75 TS. Old residents of the town say that Dushore was never visited by a larg er crowd at one time than was seen their on Monday. Age and youth joined hands and hearts; the ageing j boys in blue were provided with carriages for their line in march | while their broken ranks was tilled with the flush of manhood who gladly marched through the mud and rain as their fathers did in the dark days of the Rebellion. The oration was delivered by Atty. E. J. Mtillin of Laporte, and every vete ran's graves in the several cemeteries about Dushore was strewn with flowers. Court Notes Irom May Term.
