P. Ingham has been directed to begin new proceedings lor the condemna tion for government uses of certain parts of the battlefield at Gettys burg, r.ow occupied by the Gettys burg electric railroad. The previous attempt to block the way of the trolley was unsuccessful because of a legal technicality. This has been removed by the Sickles bill, which was hurried through Congress and has met the approval of the Presi dent As we suggested when the previous proceedings were begun, there are two sides to this question, and the present status of things should lead to a compromise ar rangement by which the interests of all concerned may be served. The battlefield at Gettysburg is quite extensive, and cannot well he gone over on foot in the limited time which most people are able to give it. Togo over it in carriages is ex pensive and the hackmen have acquired a reputation for extortion ate charges. The trolley then would be a great convenience to thousands of visitors. On the other band no point or position 011 the field should be marred or desecrated, as the present route of the trolly would mar. It, is entirely prac ticable to preserve the field intact and at the same time give the trolly a right of way. This is the proper solution of the vexed problem, and now that the government has the matter in its own hands we ex- Eect that such an arrangement will e made. MONTOtK'N SENATORIAL t O\- VEKEES. ('halliinl and Uerringer Have the FiKlit ami t'oclirunCietM the Delegates. The Montour county Senatorial muddle has finally readied a peace ful solution. After a bitter fight, and the postponement of the con sideration of the subject from the regular meeting of the countv con vention on June 4th until a special meeting on Monday Juno 11 th, both the local candidates—Messrs. Chal fant and Gerringer withdrew and the conferees were given to J. Henry Cochran, of Williamsport, who will be Lycoming county's choice for the honor. This action practically settles Mr. Cochran's nomination, an 1 secures the district an ablo an worthy representative.—Milton lie cord. Will our Democratic Senatorial cindicates give up the fight to Mr. ol Williamsport? Guess not. While Cochran has the con ferees of Lycoming and Montour, lie will require at least one conferee trom either little Sullivan or old Columbia to secure his nomination and our people know it ami thev propose going into the battle with liead and tail up ami if some c»ne of them don't get there, it won t be be oiuse they haven't got a still upper np. 1 his is a good send off for our delegation of candidates and we trust they will appreciate it. This is the season of the year when the city cousin admires the old buckwheat uncle, residing ou the country farm. There is nothing that will draw city and country relatives together more closely than —hot weather. The Eagles Mere store was opened for business, on Monday, Jeremiah Kelly proprietor. This store is one of the largest in the county. You can purchase anything from a sowing needle to a bed room suit of Jere. If you don't observe what you want ask for it.
