Why is it that when a girl en counters a muddy crossing she in var ibly -walks on her heels, and when a man strikes one he walks on his toes ? The opening of the Laporte Hotel under the new management, on this Friday evening, promises to be a success. A general invitation is ex tended. Philip and Charley Stewart, two little sons of Mr. Stewart, one of the proprietors of the Laporte Hotel, are spending the week with friends in Clearfield county. Henry Cochran of Williams port, is among the numerous aspir ants looking for the Democratic nomination to the Senate, from this district. Our home democratic friends think it about time Sullivan was recognized. Water works are being putin at Eagles Mere. The reservoir will be located on Cyclone Ilill. The peo pie of the 'Mere arc elated over the project. The Eagles Mere .Land Company and others, will furnish capital for the enterprise. Each year's effort should be to exceed last year's sales. The only sure way to do it is to advertise. Advertise in busy times because the iron must be struck while it is hot, and advertise in dull times to heat the iron. It can be done. Lewis Maliaffey of Laporte, went over to Dushorc on his bicycle Sun day. Oil his return, he said he was just one hour going over and one hour and fifteen minutes mak ing the return trip. The distance is nearly ten miles if not quite. Edward L. Smith has been ap pointed post-master at Towanda. There was a spirited contest for this appointment. Ihe applicants were: Smith, John A. A machine is out at last which runs it self; that is it does not re quire any motive power from the rider. It is fitted with a motor ar rangement behind the rear wheel, and one gallon of oil will run the machine for 100 miles. The pedals and chains are still retained on the machine. The wheels are fitted with 4 inch diameter pneumatic tires. The machiner/for the oil well is 011 the way here and in the course of two or three weeks will be in place, and the boring for oil will commence. It is understood that the first well will be located either midway between Forkston and Me hoopany or else at Forkston. If oil or gas should not be found in this well other wells will be put down' farther on up the creek and a thorough test will be made. —Tunk- hannock Republican. The Dushore Gazette is a good illustration of the way the majority of country newspapers work to build up their own towns. Even under the gloomiest circumstances and with the appearances of darkest prospects ahead, we never saw a I line in the Gazette that appeared I doubtful of Dushore's continued | growth and prosperity. It is the i same with the newspapers in nearlj' every town, and the business men owe more to the newspapers than they generally realize. President Cleveland has vetoed the "Seigniorage Bill" presented by Mr. Bland and the Duce is to pay in Washington. The Senate is dis gusted with President Cleveland and the President is disgusted with the democratic Senate, and the Democratic friends of the Adminis tration residing in the rural districts, are praying for harmony to reign in their ranks. The Republicans are wandering what this Administration will do anyway, and a few Demo crats have their eye open in that direction, too. The ladies of Laporte have organ ized a society which will be known as the Ladies Aid Society of La porte. The society will meet at Mrs. F. W, Meylert's, Thursday afternoon, from 2 to 5 o'clock p. in. The following officers were elected : President, Mrs. T. J. Keeler; vice president, Mrs, 11. A. Conklin; sec retary, Miss Maud Crossley; assist ant secretaries, Mrs. J. W. Ballard and Miss Emma Tinklepaugh; treas urer, Miss Jeanelte Spencer. The proceeds will go toward the M. E. church building. M \ui> CKOSSLEV, Sec'y. The war against the nickle-in-the slot machines in New York is get ting vigorous, and Snperintendant Byrens has ordered their icmoval throughout his jurisdiction. The anti-gamblers cite as evidence of the extent of their pernicious in fluence the fact that six firms have already gone into the manufacture of the machine, and the profits of one of these firms have been stated by an agent of the concern to be §SOO a day. Several banks have re fused the deposits of some of these firms, and in most instances it is said the reason for doing so was be cause the business of the applicants was not considered to be of a char acter justifying the bank's accepting the accounts. The machines are either sold to saloon keepers out right or rented for an equal division of the profits. The proprietors of several places where the machines arc being run have told a repre sentative of the New \ ork Moil ib Express that the SSO paid for the machine was made up out of the profits of the first two days running it. The Mail cD Express says they are a clear violation of the sections of the penal code defining gambling. In Brooklyn and Buffalo the city authorities have already banished j thcin. A building buum is certain to strike Laporte this spring. The following named persons will erect buildings here this Reason, viz ; The Laporte Building Association will put up four neat and attractive dwellings, which they will offer for rent. Hon. Kussel Karns will erect a cozy home 011 his Lake Mokoma lot. Chas. J.andon has already commenced the building of a home 011 his lot, 011 West Meylert street. Mr. Clias Wrede contemplates build ing a fine home at Lake Mokoma; J. W. Ballard has commenced the erecting of a paint shop. Alplion sii9 Walsh will erect a neat dwell ing on his lot adjoining Mr. Land oil's on West Meylert street; and W. J. Lawrence who has the con tract of erecting the new courthouse will, at the end ot the season, put up a dwelling on his lot 011 West Mey lert street. There are others talk ing of erecting houses at Laporte, but they do not give it out as certain, hence we make no mention of it. With these ten buildings **oing up and the courthouse, times will be lively at the county seat, this summer. Wlmt our exchanges have to say of 15. W. Lewis Esq., who was nom inated for President Judge bv the Republicans of Wyoming county, recently : Towanda Republican : "Mr. Low is is a native of Bradford county, born at Wyalusing, where he has many relatives. He is a thoroughly equipped attorney in full practice, a gentleman of unblemished character. If the Republicans of Wyoming will do as well for him as they did for Mr. Grow, they will make his elec tion sure. It is Wyoming's oppor tunity, and Mr. Lewis should re ceive the united efforts of the Re publicans for triumphant success." Wyalusing Rocket : "The nam ing oi Mr. Lewis for such an im portant office will please everyone j Were at his old home, where he is I known as a man of the highest i Christian character, and as a brilliaut 1 man intellectually. Wyoming would | lie honored to have Mr. Lewis as its : presiding judge." Towanda Reporter-Journal : "The Republicans of Wyoming county I have named 15. W.
