our HL NEE City Dads Disposed of Consider- able Important Business Last Night The regular monthly meeting of the Sayre borough council was held in the Packer hose rooms last evening, Lacey, Samuels, West Adamy, Hulett, Hassler, Evars and Hawes being present. The meeting was the first to be held in the hose rooms, the old council chamber having become unfit for use, J. C. Wood, of West Sayre, ap- peared before the council and stated that each hose company was to re~ ceive either gas or the sum of gio per year. Mr. Wood stated that the company to which he belonged had not received either the gas or the money for a period of three years. He was informed by the council that the gas company had turned over the sum of $20 but that the remaining $10 had not been received. An order for $20 was drawn in favor of the hose company and the remaining ten dollars will be paid over as soon as 216 Desmond Bt., Sayrc. 322 8. A gold watch given free to the holder of the lucky coupon at Loomis opera house tonight. Henry Jomes of Athens was ads mitted to the hospital today. He is suffering from typhoid fever, S¢e the Herald Square Moving pictures at the Loomis opera house this evening. Election returns. Packer's pond was entirely frozen The application of C. R. Bennett for position of special police force was referred to the police committee. Ceuncilman Adamy repcrted that the arc lights had been dim for several nights and that some of them were out entirely, It devel- oped that two machines had burned out causing the lights to bum weak. The statement concerning the lights called forth the assertion that the police have not been res porting lights that were out. Council Evans insisted that the police should do their duty ia this respect. He stated that they had recently been given an increase in pay, and that they should perform the labor required of them. He suggested that “a sharp stick” be used The residents of Hopkins street presented to the council a request for gas and water. The request was referred. A bill presented by M. H. Saw telle for $1575 for expenses of a trip to New York provoked con- siderable attention, Councilman Hassler asked that the bill be scrutinized. During the discus sion which followed it developed that Mr. Sawtelle had gone to New York to interview Schapper- cotter, the attorney for the Lehigh Valley, with reference to the ef fort which the borough is making to get the right of way to lay the sewer under the company tracks. It also developed that Mr. Sawtelle had been successful in securing terms which will be of considerable advantage to the borough, The bill was payed without any further hesitatation. N. F. Walker, the borough en gineer, presented a bill for $165.75 the major part of which was for making the survey om the east side. A bill for £6 for shooting dogs was presented to the council. The police report for the month showed that one dollar had been collected in fines. “King” Kelley had paid this. The council adjourned until next Tuesday evening when the sewer question will again be taken up. PLEASANT LY ENTERTAINED Mr. and Mrs B F. Parsons, of Linden Grove, North Waverly, pleasantly entertained a number of their many friends on Friday even- ing last. A No. 5 Victor talking machine furnished an excellent musical program. A violin and organ also contributed greatly to the amusement of the evening. Those present were Mr, and Burt Edgecomb, Mr. aod Mrs. Evart Lowman, son and daughter, Mr, and Mrs, William Ring, Mr, and George Bowman. 5 res bry 10 he) SCHOOL BORD NE LIT GT Session Was Short and But Little Business Transacted. The burough school directors met in regular monthly session last evening, all the members of the board being present with the ex- ception of Talada. The session was short, there being but little business to transact. A large number of bills were paid and I N. Evans was appointed attorney for the board. The treasurer's report shows that there is $11,650.42 on hand, Superintendent Stetler reported that a boy under sixteen years, who is attending school, works in a bowling alley at night. Mr, Stetler says that the loss of sleep renders the boy unfit for school work and suggested that the board look into the matter. The board may be compelled to take action unless the matter is adjusted by the boy's parents. Recently a pupil in the high school broke a window glass while at play. The board split the difference, and will pay half the cost of putting in a new light, whiie the boy will be compelled to pay the other half. LOCAL NEWS Dr, H. S. Sayre will poll a big vote in each of the four wards, hacks and rigs of every’de- scription having been pressed into service by the workers in order to get the vote out. Mrs. G. A. Holden of North Lehigh avenue, has returned from Schenectady, N. Y, where she has been visiting her sister for the last two weeks. CHARGED WITH LARCENY James Smith, a man who is quite well along in years, was arrested yesterday forenoon by Constable Spencer Brougham on a warrant sworn out by T. P. Maney, charg- ing larceny. Smith entered into a contract with Maney to clear away timber from a piece of woodland on the east side of the Susquehanna, but Maney alleges that Smith went beyond the limit and cut trees and sold them.
