able Important Business Last
Night
The regular monthly meeting of
the Sayre borough council was
held in the Packer hose rooms
last evening, Lacey, Samuels, West
Adamy, Hulett, Hassler, Evars
and Hawes being present. The
meeting was the first to be held in
the hose rooms, the old council
chamber having become unfit for
use,
J. C. Wood, of West Sayre, ap-
peared before the council and stated
that each hose company was to re~
ceive either gas or the sum of gio
per year. Mr. Wood stated that
the company to which he belonged
had not received either the gas or
the money for a period of three
years. He was informed by the
council that the gas company had
turned over the sum of $20 but
that the remaining $10 had not
been received. An order for $20
was drawn in favor of the hose
company and the remaining ten
dollars will be paid over as soon as

that the arc lights had been dim
for several nights and that some of

that Mr. Sawtelle had gone to
New York to interview Schapper-
cotter, the attorney for the Lehigh
Valley, with reference to the ef
fort which the borough is making
to get the right of way to lay the
sewer under the company tracks.
It also developed that Mr. Sawtelle
had been successful in securing
terms which will be of considerable
advantage to the borough, The
bill was payed without any further
hesitatation.
N. F. Walker, the borough en
gineer, presented a bill for $165.75
the major part of which was for
making the survey om the east
side.
A bill for £6 for shooting dogs
was presented to the council.
The police report for the month
showed that one dollar had been
collected in fines. “King” Kelley
had paid this.
The council adjourned until next
Tuesday evening when the sewer
question will again be taken up.

SCHOOL BORD

Session Was Short and But
Little Business Transacted.
The burough school directors
met in regular monthly session last
evening, all the members of the
board being present with the ex-
ception of Talada. The session
was short, there being but little
business to transact. A large
number of bills were paid and I
N. Evans was appointed attorney
for the board.
The treasurer's report shows
that there is $11,650.42 on hand,
Superintendent Stetler reported
that a boy under sixteen years,
who is attending school, works in
a bowling alley at night. Mr,
Stetler says that the loss of sleep
renders the boy unfit for school
work and suggested that the board
look into the matter. The board
may be compelled to take action
unless the matter is adjusted by
the boy's parents.
Recently a pupil in the high
school broke a window glass while
at play. The board split the
difference, and will pay half the
cost of putting in a new light, whiie
the boy will be compelled to pay
the other half.

“Over Niagara Falls" was pre-

displayed at any election, not ever
excepting a presidential year. In
Sayre the voting began carly. By

swiftly throughout the entire day
There have been no disturbances
of any kind, the crowds at each of
the polling places being of an
orderly character. Sayre will poll
a big vote in each of the four
wards, hacks and rigs of every’de-
scription having been pressed into
service by the workers in order to
get the vote out. The election will
go down in history as the warmest
contest that has been held in this
district in years.

CHARGED WITH LARCENY
James Smith, a man who is quite
well along in years, was arrested
yesterday forenoon by Constable
Spencer Brougham on a warrant
sworn out by T. P. Maney, charg-
ing larceny. Smith entered into a
contract with Maney to clear away
timber from a piece of woodland
on the east side of the Susquehanna,
but Maney alleges that Smith went
beyond the limit and cut trees and
sold them. When arraigned before
Justice Carey yesterday afternoon
Smith denied the charge and de-
manded a hearing which was set
for Thursday next,
