Recently orders were issued to the special officers to see that persons not entitled to ride on trains were arrested and dealt with according to law. On last Sunday wholesale arrests were made at Rockdale. Officers were stationed at that place and while the train stopped long enough to take water the cars were searched and every body on them except the train's crew were nabbed. Sixteen men were taken in custody and later safely landed in the Allentown jul Five of the 16 were from Lehigh ton, two from Allentown, two from Bethlehem and four from Easton The balance arc knights of the road. The Lehighton men had been to Allentown and were on their way home. The men will be given hear- ings on the charge of illegal train nding. The penalty in case of conviction is a fine not exceeding five dollars or ten days in the county jail At this season of the year rail~ road men are greatly annoyed by tramps and young men who appear to think that they have a perfect right to ride trains whether they have permission or not Especially on Sundays young men between the age of 15 and 20 will leave their homes to take a free ride to distant The prac- tice 1s a pernicious one and many fatalities have resulted, to say nothing of serious injuries and loss The officials of the Les high Valley this spring will put forth a vigorous effort to break up train riding, and their efforts will have the hearty endorsement of all good citizens. Here is a mew departure in handing out jus- tice, and from this long distance it is hardly possible to know in just what manner the learned court jus tified his conclusions. To ‘us it has always seemed that the average gewgaw, flattened out circus-tent shaped style of headgear worn by the gentler sex is subject to almost any kind of adverse criticism. Fare round : ANGE Laos ‘Was Selected for this Important Post at a Meeting of the Di- rectors Held Last Night The directors of the Loomis opera house held a meeting last night for the purpose of arranging the business affairs of the house for the next theatrical season. Among the important matters dis- posed of last night was the selection of a manager. H. C. Watrous, the well known clerk in the Ciu- zen bank, Waverly, who has acted as treasurer for Manager Tobias for the past year, leased the house and will conduct the same next season. Although a young man, Mr. Watrous has had the benefit of and profited by first class busi ness anstruction, and it can be safely predicted that he will make a successful manager He will give to the patrons of the house the privilege of witnessing attrac- tions of a high order of merit, and will make many changes in the conduct of the theatre the comfort and entertainment of those who patronize it. There were several applicants for this imports tant post, making the competition decidedly strong. WORTHY OF NOTE The Record is pleased to note the appearance of the “Annual Statement”.of Bradford county in a paper published in this end of the county. Last night's Evening News printed the statement. Here tofore it has been the tendency on the part of the commissioners to award the printing of the states ment to weekly papers, for past | for political services, whose circulation in this end of the county has been of a limited nature. Therefore the residents of Sayre and Athens have not been given the oppor- tunity to see what has been going on with reference to the handling of the peoples’ money by the county officials. The commis- sioners are to be congratulated upon awarding the statement to a paper in this section, evidently en tirely ignoring political reasons. RATHER MISLEADING In the County Auditors’ Annual Statement under the heading “Commonwealth Costs,” appears the following “Charles C. Yocum, attorney, et al, attendance and mileage, $3,32364" At first glance it appears to the casual observer that Mr. Yocum is drawing a pretty fair sized salary from the county for “attendance and mileage,” but after you have held communion with Daniel Webster's little book of poems under the head of “Latin words and phrases” and become perfectly familiar with the term “et al” you will discover that there are others besides Mr. Yocum who have a legal and undivided interest in the sum mentioned. ee ———r tte WILL PRAY FOR SUCCESS Councilmen G. W. Heverley and C. C. West and N. F. Walker, bor-~ ough engineer, are in Harrisburg today conferring with the State De- partment of Health with reference to the proposed sewer system for Sayre. They ‘were in charge of Matthew Cleary {of Sayre, who has the reputation of getung along in a first-class man- ner with the men under him. The Lehigh has been furnishing four freight cars for carrying the men to (and from their work, but on Mon- day afternoon it appears that one of the cars was needed for another Furpose, so yesterday morning in- stead of there being four cars to carry the men there were only three. Instantly there were signs of revolt, and finally when they were told by the boss to get into down their tools. They claim that three cars did not furnish sufficient railroad and uttered many threats, but as the officials of the company men will be paid off and discharged today son of Sayre went to Rummerfield cigners get gay.
