The J>nil.y Review Towantla, Pa, Thursday, Oct 13, 1881. E TUTORS !. W. At.XOBLIS N r . AhVOltl) "offf7y Heri'to" mmltf 95 eeuta prr mouth. Vi'ff it. Baity and Wolfe. General Silas M. llaily the Hepublican candidate for State Treasurer, whom Mr. Wolfe is so vindictively anxious to defeat is .one of those "hundreds of thousands of tiie noblest heroes." The '•independ ent," candidate, who was a valiant home guard when inen were wanted at the front, endeavored to throw a doubt on G neral daily's soldier record by stating that he had "nothing to say" about it. It, is highly probable that the old soldiers of the State and the patriotic people thereof, who are honest, consistant and true to the principles and pledges of the Republican party, w ill remember General daily's record and reward hint by their votes and elect him State Treasurer. • That Mr. Wolfe is arrogant and au dacious in character, we have abuudaut evidence furnished by himself. Mr. Wolfe raises the standard of revolt against the alleged domination of "boss es"—yet bis whole political career is the record of a persistant st ruggle waged for the attainment of the dictatorship of the Republican party of l'ennsy Ivama. More than any other rn in he is responsible for the continuance of the discreditab'e Sen atorial deadlock at Ilarrishurg last win-j ter, in which lus shibboleth was "rule or ruin." Failing then in the full accom plishment of his purpose, be went into the State convention to renew the strug gle for suprmiL-y, and again defeated, he resorted to the desperate ultimatum of revolt against the party, and under the specious cry of 'reform" appeals to lle- publicans to sacrifice principle, honor, good faith and all that true uieu hold dear, and follow him in his crusade for the overthrow of the glorious old Kcpuh . lican par*,y of Pennsylvania and the tri umph of the enemy with which it has heen battling for twenty years. That a sufficient number of Republicans to ac complish Mr. Wolfe's purpose can lie be guiled into thus stultifying themselves seems incredible.— Allegheny Mail. Chicago grain speculators have struck a snag. On Monday last wheat had reach ed the very high rate of $1.4:1. On Sat urday it had gone down to SI 35, and corn had followed suit—passing from 70 cents to 03, Pork also felt the pressure, falling 40 cents during the week. One linn collapsed with 12,000,00 bushels of corn on its hands. Grain was at once shipped East to Buffalo in large quanti ties, with the result of a material decline in prices. Corn fell cents on October options and November coutracts went off 2y and 3 cents lower. Other produce sympathized and men's souls were tried the small operators feeling very much as if they had fallen into dens of thieves and bears or had been gored by bulls. Bu' no one will care a moment for their loss es or their grief. They who play with lire must expect to be burned. The lat est reports, as is invariably the case, in short crop years, are very reviving. Bradstrect reports us follows: Yield of wheat in the Western 5tate5,248,127,000; Southern States, 40.000,000; Middle States, 34,7)00,000; Pacific coast, 33,825,- 000; Colorado and Territories, 12 000, 000; New England, 1,000,000; total, 308,- 962,000 bushels; against 480.000.000 las year, showing a loss of 111,038,000 hush els. The yield of the corn crop is Western States, 769,241.000: Southern States. 247,000,000; Middle States, 62. 400,000; New England States, 7,000,000: Territories, 5,000,000; Pacific coast, 2 - 500,000; total, 1,163,641,000, against 1,- 500,000 last year. The directors of Bedford county have n uniform series of text hooks for the pub lic schools. The loss at the recent tiro at Kldred, McKcnii county, is estimated at fifty thousand dollars. An oW well just opened uear Greens- Westmoreland county, yields twen ty-five barrels a day. The Lehigh coal and navigation com pany will pay its first dividend for sev eral years in November. . Gen. daily, Republican candidate for State Treasurer is received with great enthusiasm wherever he goes in the State. The full measure of Conkling's in jury to his party by resigning his seat is now manifest in the election of a Demo cratic Vice President. A suit has begun at Quebec against A. 11. Murphy, Member of Parliament, for #150,000, alleged penalty for sitting in the legislative assembly without the proper legal qualifications. Two of the Iron Mountain train rob bers who were confined in the penitentia ry at Little Rock have confessed. Their names are Samuel and Thomas Williams. They were formerly printers in St. Au gustine, Fla., and were out of money and plundered the train for funds to get mar lied on. The Philadelphia Tlotes says: "It is yet too soon to present anything like a safe estimate of Wolfe's vote 111 this city, but, if ids cause shall continue to pro gress as it has progressed during the last week, lie will be likely to receive more than 20,000 votes in Philadelphia, and 40,000 is not beyond the tange of possi bility. If the vote were to be taken to morrow, daily would receive about 50,- 000, Noble about 50.000 and Wolfe about 20,000. TB.I PA. AND N. T. It. n. Train* on the Pa. & N. V. R.
