Tlie Daily Review. Towanda, Pa., Wednesday, Sept. 14, 188'. EDITORS B. W. ALVOIM). NOBLE N. ALVOKD. "EPuiit/ Kwifif" only 85 rent* per month. Try it, The Philadelphia Press was one of the warmest supporters of Senator Davies in his canvass for the nomination for State Treasurer and did all in its power to de feat the "machine politicians," 'out it takes no stock in the movement of Wolfe. It thus logically closes a long article in favor of .standing by the flay;: Mr Wolfe's appeal is to the Independ ent Republicans. The Press will not be surpassed in true independence. Its rec ord and its attitude speak for themselves. Without arrogating more than its service warrants, it feels that it has some claim to the attention of those who fought tin- i der the banner of independence at Ihtrris burg, and by that right it invokes the Republicans of the State to stand by the Republican Hag. It knows the wrongs of the Convention, and has not hesitated to reprobate them. Hut it knows, too, ! the greater wrong and danger of striking down the cause of Republicanism in this hour of trial and clouding the future with a Democratic triumph. Upon what valid ground can such a result, he sought or justified? Not because it is necessary in order to continue the fight, for popular rule within the Republican party tor that wII go right on. Not because there is 110 hope of success without it, for the on ward march of the past two years will so" 11 bring victory. Not because it is re quired to save a p blic trust from unwor thy hands, for General daily's honor is stainless. This is not one of those great emergencies which justify and demand revolutionary action —least of all revolu tionary action which can have no otner result but Democratic success. The pro test has been made. The lines have been strengthened for the next contest. The candidate is personally unexceptionable. Republican defeat would carry deep re gret through the Republican ranks of the whole Union and Democratic success would be a sad refrain to greet a Presi- j dent saved from the jaws of death and to j sustain the great work of which he is the! leader. And so for the sake of Republican ; principles, for the sake of the President j himself, let the Republicans of Penn.M 1- j vania, now that their ticket is in the field I post pone their differences to the appro priate time and stand together in follow ing the Republican flag. The keenest interest is felt among sporting men both in England and Amer ica over the chances of Iroquois for the St. Ledger at the Doncaster races next Wednesday. The famous horse has been afflicted by a severe cough which imper ils his fair prospects of success and darn pe is tlie glowing anticipations of anoth er American success. Nevertheless Iro quois will be driven to his utmost speed and may possibly yet win the prize. The Republican county ticket nominat ed on the Gtli inst. has been accepted by the people of the county with exceptional unanimity. The competitors for the nominations, as well as others, uniting in giv.ng the several candidates a hearty support. This is as it should be. They are all good men and entitled to the sup port of their fellow paVtizans. Mr. Saukey, the evangelist, lef; New York Saturday, for a tour of the world. He and Mr. Moody will begin their labors in England the middle of October. From there they will proceed to Ireland and the continent. Four hundred clergymen of the Irish Episcopal chhrch have invited them to preach in Ireland. Senator Cameron is reported as declar ing himself in favor of removing the tax from tobacco, because so many men and boys use the weed. The same argument would hold good in regard to beer and whiskey. If Wolfe succeeds iu drawing enough votes away from Daily to elect the Dem ocratic candidate, what good will lie iiave accomplished to the cause of Independ ent Republicanism? Did Wolfe raise tlie black llag against the Cameron clan in his last convention? That faction does not seem to have been represented. The convention which nominated Wolfe for Treasurer was cnt'rely harmonious. It was composed of hin.self. * ~ The Fair begins in two weeks. What are you doing to make it a success? Gov.
