A large farm ham, containing 100 bushels of wheat, quantity of oats, 20 tons of hay and a large calf, the property of N. T. HORTON, near Sugar Run. was burned Sunday night at 8 o'clock. No insurance. It was evidently the work of an incendiary, but toe perpetra tor is not known. The loss falls very heavi ly on Mr. 11. The forest fires in Michigan devoured eve ry town in their pathway—except one. The village of Sand Beach was protected by Hol ly water works, and no flame could come nigh it that was not instantly beaten back by powerful streams of water. Dr. Agnew publishes a statement that hii.was never called on to act as referee in the settlement of the question of the retiring surgeons. Ferris, the new Tichborne claimant, has left San Diego, probably for New- York, whence he will go to Europe and press his claims. The contributions to the free ice water fund in New York average only 54 cents a day and the drinks outnumber the pen nies a thousand times. A norther passed over Fort Supply, I. T., last Saturday, and a great deal of stock was frozen to dmith. Out of one heard of six hundred, only half escaped. The next regetta of the National Asso ciation of Amateur Oarsmen will lie held in Detroit. Probably the Ililsdale crew will be sent abroad as representatives of the Association. Ex Minister White arrived in New York Saturday, on the steamer Elba, which came over in the fastest time on record. The alumni of Cornell will give President White a reception October fourth. The temperance people of Oberliu Ohio, have been holding meetings in the hope of persuading the hotel keepers and drug gists of that town to sign a pledge neither to sell or give away spirituous liquors, the apothecaries being urged not to fur nish such liquors " straight " even upon a physician's prescription. The desired pledge is not to be binding unless all deal ers in alcoholic beverages agree to it. All but two have yielded, and the question now is whether these obstinate holders out can be persuaded to join the others. Ed.
