The To bacco Lc<if gi ves some interesting figures showing that ] ( .)f>,S2-'l eases of seed leaf tc ' baeeo were used in the niauufacturies of ! this country during the past fiscal year. ; There were returned for taxation during , that period 2.(!52,<120.7'.'7 cigars and cite- roots—the cheroots being so few in num- ber as not to be worth considering by themselves. Of the cigars on which tax es were paid about 45,000,000 were im ported, leaving 2,027,020,790 of domestic production. In their manufacture 159,- 830 cases ot 350 pounds each or 55,940,- 419 pounds of seed leaf or domestic to bacco were used, and about 8,000,000 pounds of Havana and 2,000,000 pounds of Sumatra aud other foreign tobaccos. During the same time 508,380,985 cigar ettes and 47,554,976 pounds of smoking tobacco were made. The cigarettes at five pounds of leaf per thousand, required 2,833,934 pounds, whereof \ or 709,233 pounds, or 2,026 cases was seed leaf. Of the smoking tobacco { or 11,888,719 pounds, equal to 33,967 cases was also composed of seed leaf. These figures are larger than for any corresponding period on record, and indicate a growth of the tobacco industry which, if not gratifying, can only be taken as an evidence of mate rial prosperity.
