Yesterday Sheriff" ROBERTSON and Chief of Police BUANS, of Towanda, Pa., arrested in Newark Valley, WILLIAM E. SMITH former ly a baker in this village, for being a deserter from the Ordnance Department, National Ar mory, Springfield, Mass. He was a printer, and deserted 011 the sth of August. He was born in Owego, but enlisted In the service in Springliold, Mass. He was taken to Spring field last evening by two officers of the Unit ed States Armory sent out to capture him.— Oiceyo Times. On Monday night, last, a fine black horse i valued at $200), and a double harness and tly net, were stolen from the barn of EDWIN BISHOP, in Wysox. Pa. The thief brought the property to the town of Tioga, where it was found 011 the premises of MURRAY DOANE, near HYATT'S Ferry, by Chief. BURNS, of Towan da, and Sheriff" ROBERTSON yesterday. Mr. DOANE says that a man brought the property to his place, and he accused him of stealing it, and that he immediatly skipped out. leaving the property in his posession. The President slept much of the night, lie is more comfortable this morning. The swelling of the right parotid gland has not increased and is more free from pain. Liquid food has already this mor ning been swallowed with relish. Pulse 100, temperature 98, respiration 17. 12 :30, p. M. The President's condition has percep tibly improved during the last twenty four hours. The parotid gland is dimin ishing and has not pained him since last evening. lie is taking an increased amout of nourishment without gastric disturbance. Pulse 109, temperature 98-8 respiration 17. The President has been easy during the afternoon, and the favorable conditions reported in the last bulletin continues. The swolen parotid gland has not been painful. The temperature is the same, and the pulse rather less frequent than at this hour yesterday. P. lse, 100; temper ature 100; respiration, 18. Blaine's dispatch to Lowell last night was: In the judgment of the physicians, the President has gained since the last report. lie has taken twenty-two ounces of liquid food with a lelish and without any apparent tendency to nausea or indi gestion. The other symptoms are not es sentially changed, the pulse and tempera ture possibly a little better. The swell ing of the parotid gland has not Increased and fear of its svppuratiou has somewhat diminished. At 11 p. 111., the President is sleeping quietly. Ilartmanu the nihilist has left Chicago.
