It is gratifying to observe a growing tendancy on the part of the American people to provide themselves with recre ation, seasons of rest trom toil, both physical and mental. The fashionable resort does not afford the kind of relief necessary. Men, and women too, are coming to recognize the fact that the world is in a great degree what we choose to make it. Our own condition of thought and soul has more to do with the enjoyment we are seeking than local hab itation. If all things serve it is pleasaut and profitable to travel for a holiday. If this is not possible, or is difficult, the man or woman who can say "My mind to me a kingdom is" may be as absolute a monarch at home as abroad. Summer leisure and winter work are enjoyable to the disposition which regards all men charitably. The foibles of mankind are not of consequence enough to provoke a wise man's displeasure, and he Is especial ly foolish who permits human follies to excite his disgust. "Uncle Toby" found room enough in the world for himself and the flies; and so may all discover that real happiness lies in seeking it in ourselves. We shall so find by the in stinct of self-preservation if we reflect that, while others appear obnoxious to ourselves, we may be so to them in the same, or to a greater degree. Nothing to do, and knowing how to do it, is the secret of rest, limited to 110 place or con dition, and better as an occasional mood than as a habit. The New York Herald still holds to the opinion expressed 011 July 0, that Presi dent Garfleid is "suffering from an exag erated and erroneous diagnosis" and a consequently erroneous and exagerated line of treatment, and wants Dr. Agnew to tell some oue why a strong man with a wound that has not penetrated any great cavity, not injured any great blood vessel, nor touched any vital organ—with a mere flesh wound in the wall of the body—ls now, after 07 days, 110 further advanced toward recovery than Mr. Gar field is? The New York Commercial Advertiser urges that unless the present postage stamp flirtation, in which a particular po sition of the stamp expresses a particular sentiment, and by which the postoflice employes are given extra work and trou ble, cease, the reassertiou of the stamped envelope plan and the suppression of all postal stamps under the grade of twenty five cents should take place. This would be a pretty severe inconvenience for ma" ny to suffer for the silly work of the nd dle-pated who may make it necessary. Referring to the case of Samuel Miller, the old man who was recently murdered, as it is alleged, in Lycoming county for the insurance which had been placed 011 his life in some of the speculative compa nies, the Pittsburg Telegraph says: "The strong arm of the law must be stretched forth and this crime against society sup pressed. When the gentlemen of the leg islature who defeated the bill against speculative life insurance read flic latest story of the fate of an old man they will ! wish that their skirts were clearer of it." j A scuttle escape for the roofs of pas senger cars has been perfected. It is ar- j ranged so as to open when a car is turn ed over at an angle of forty-five degrees, ! and it is intended to have two or three in each car according to the length of the cars. The device is doubtless a good one, but it isn't a pleasant reilection to constant travelers that if is a necessary one. Prof. Bell says he intends to give his new invention of the induction balance to the world because he does not think there should be a patent upon a device that promises to be so beneficial to sur gical science. This is certainly a com mendable spirit. The cattle shipping business at Council Bluffs, is now fairly under way. Stock men say that fully 200,000 cattle will be shipped from the West to the Eastern markets this season. The sales at the yards there will also be very large.
