SHAW, GEORGE BROWN- 11. W. THOMAS, N. W. WALDRON, MILTON LOOMIS, C. L. SQUIRES Keep out of office. Thousands of men have their eyes turned to some lucrative i position. They are tired of earning their living in customary ways and yearn for the fleshpots of office. Of these thou- , sands, nine-tenths are doomed to disap pointment; but, after all, is It not for their good? Of all occupations, office-i holding is the most precarious and the ! least satisfactory. To be at the mercy, at the whim or caprice of a politician j himself a creature of a superior, is to be in purgatory. But few offices pay well, i The work as a rule is not hard, lazy hab its arc engendered, dissimulation and treachery are apt to be developed, sturdy independence is undertoned and un-Amer ican ideas are sown In fallow soil. To professional politicians the life of an of fice-holder has charms. To men at the top of the ladder come power and influ ence; but to the ordinary, dependent su bordinate there is a wearing restlessness which is burdened often with disappoint ment and is never free from uncertainty ; and apprehension. Unless a man gives an honest day's work, and the fact is that quite one-half of the office-holders of to day do very little labor, and that grudg ingly. A Ilarrisburg dispatch prophecies I.lms lv : "A month or two ago there was ev ery indication that the coming Con veil-: tion would lie equally as stormy as the last Republican State Convention held here was, at which the fatal stab was given to the third term business by 'one half of the Convention refusing to be bound by the instructions to support j Grant as a unit at Chicago; but Guiteau's bullet has ellected such wonderful results in harmonizing Pennsylvania politicians 1 that on the night proceeding this Repub lican Convention the Cameron lion, the 7 I troublesome Wolfe, from the rugged for-1 csts of Union, and the lamblike Quay will; lie down together, and tlie next morning i will walk up the hill to the convention, ' nominate Senator Davies of Bradford, I : lor State Treasurer, appoint Col. A. Lou-; don Suowdou, of Philadelphia, Chairman j of the State Committee, walk down the j hill again, accept Senator Cameron's in- j vitation to test the quality of his wines, i and then go home happy." There are physicians who, through in terviews with reporters, or, still more openly in the public press over their own signatures, have condemned the medical treatment to which Mr Garfield has been subjected. The doctors in charge, how ever, have this to their credit, that their patient seems, in their hands, to be pro gressing toward recovery. If there is any fault of omission or commission in their management of the case that is pal pable, unequivocal or patent to profes sional intelligence, it might be prudent and proper to poiut attention to the er ror. But the criticism bestowed on the attendant physicians has been vague and uncertain, dealing mostly with generali ' ties. Under the circumstances it would I be wise to refrain from embarrassing the ! doctors by forcing a discussion of medi j cal systems into the public press. The only significance in the Kentucky J election is that politics are very dull in i that State. Without much effort ou ei ther side and au unusual light vote, the Democrats managed to show about then customary majority. The legislature I just choseu is strongly in favor of the re election of Mr Beck to the U. S. Senate. Mr. Beck is a valuable member of that body. He has outgrown much of the ex ! treme partisanship he used to display when in the House of Representatives, and ranks among the most intelligent, industrious alul fair-minded of the Demo cratic Senators, He is much more use ful to his State and to the country than any man would be likely to prove whom Kentucky would send in his place if he were pushed aside, and we are glad his return is assured. Six cows belonging to John Tracy, ot Plymouth, Montgomery county, were bit ten by a mad dog a few days ago. They soon developed hydrophobia in its worst form, bellowing, frothing at the mouth, and trying to gore everything that came in their way. Their sufferings were frightful to witness, and they were all killed to end their misery. The dog that bit them escaped. Business Cards.
