Green peas, grown hereabouts, have made their appearance in market. The new law, giving teachers pay, will ir crrase she attendance at the teachers' insti tute to be held here in August. The Ladies Missionary Society of the Pres byterian church, will meet this after noon ai 3 o'clock, at Mrs. JOHN E. FOX'S. Sheriff DEAN is superintending work on his farm in South Creek. We 4 believe he is erecting himself a new house which he proposes to occupy at the expiration of his term of office. A gentleman who keeps himself posted in regard to such matters, directs our attention to the fact that the county jail is becoming depopulated. He considers it an ominous sign. There are hut five piisoners in jail at present. Mrs. BARSTOW baa added to the appear ance of her residence by cutting the branches from a large locust tree in the front yard which had become unsightly and unsafe from age. The trunk will be allowed to stand as a support for climbing vines. FRED WILCOX, of the Argus office, has gone to Cape May to assist his brother.in-law in conducting a hotel during the heated term. His arrival in Philadelphia is thus elirouicled in the Press of Monday: " The signature of Hon. F. L. WILDOX of Towanda, Pa., is on the register of the Wasliiugton Hotel." We saw at RODGERS' factory the other day two clear pine planks, twenty-five feet long, 2 inches thick and more 2 feet wide, contain ing over two hundred feet. They were valu ed at sl3. The lumber was purchased from Mr. M. A. SHAW and was manufactured in Canada. The anniversary celebration of Crystal Lodge K. of 11. which comes off at Mercur Hall to-moraow evening promises to be a very enjoyable affair. The several committees are busy perfecting arrungemrnts. The amplify ing of the fourth degree work will give the uninitiated some idea of what the teachings of the Order are. The entertainment is to conclude with a banquet, prepared by the la dies. Owego Gazette: Mr CORNELIUS BROOKS, of Tioga Centre, while cleauing up some roots etc., from a piece of land which he had been clearing of stumps, last Thursday, at a moment when his attention was attracted else where, suddenly became conscious of a crawl ing sensation about one of his legs. Looking down he discovered a huge blacksnake coil ing itself about his leg, together with a piece of root which he was holding in his hand, In his other hand Mr. BROOKS had a sharp axe, and with a strange presence of mind he cooly waited until the reptile's head came across the piece of root in passing around for the third coil and deliberately struck with his axe and cut the snake's head off. It was a monster of a snake, as large as a man's wrist and over six feet long. PRIZE MONEY RIFLE MATCH —At Tow au dit, Pa., July 4,1881. Under the auspices of the Towanda Rifle Club.
