Sheriff DEAN is superintending work on
his farm in South Creek. We 4 believe he
is erecting himself a new house which he
proposes to occupy at the expiration of his
term of office.
A gentleman who keeps himself posted in
regard to such matters, directs our attention
to the fact that the county jail is becoming
depopulated. He considers it an ominous
sign. There are hut five piisoners in jail at
present.
Mrs. BARSTOW baa added to the appear

age. The trunk will be allowed to stand as

FRED WILCOX, of the Argus office, has
gone to Cape May to assist his brother.in-law
in conducting a hotel during the heated term.
His arrival in Philadelphia is thus elirouicled
in the Press of Monday: " The signature of
Hon. F. L. WILDOX of Towanda, Pa., is on
the register of the Wasliiugton Hotel."
We saw at RODGERS' factory the other day
two clear pine planks, twenty-five feet long,
2 inches thick and more 2 feet wide, contain
ing over two hundred feet. They were valu
ed at sl3. The lumber was purchased from
Mr. M. A. SHAW and was manufactured in
Canada. The planks were made into "cut
ting boards" for HUMPHREY BROTHERS K
TRACY.
—
My God! eo tender and true,
How dreary life would be
Without the sweet companionship
I always tind in Thee!
Wash me anew in Jesus' blood,
And guide me by Thine hand,
Until in heaven I see Thy face'
And in Thy glory stand.

The anniversary celebration of Crystal
Lodge K. of 11. which comes off at Mercur

enjoyable affair. The several committees are
busy perfecting arrungemrnts. The amplify

of the Order are. The entertainment is to
conclude with a banquet, prepared by the la

Owego Gazette: Mr CORNELIUS BROOKS,
of Tioga Centre, while cleauing up some
roots etc., from a piece of land which he had
been clearing of stumps, last Thursday, at a
moment when his attention was attracted else
where, suddenly became conscious of a crawl
ing sensation about one of his legs. Looking
down he discovered a huge blacksnake coil
ing itself about his leg, together with a piece
of root which he was holding in his hand,
In his other hand Mr. BROOKS had a sharp
axe, and with a strange presence of mind he
cooly waited until the reptile's head came
across the piece of root in passing around for
the third coil and deliberately struck with his
axe and cut the snake's head off. It was a
monster of a snake, as large as a man's wrist
and over six feet long.

M\! Dear Sir —The picture arrived this
morning, and was paid for and taken in less

in town; in fact, the fiuest I ever saw at any

your talent, ai d assure "vou that you" will

on exhibition in window I could secure vou
hundreds of dollars worth of work. I have
compared it with former one of same subject
made by you at sls I think, and this is very
much finer.
