The fifth lecture of the Susquehanna Colle giate Institute course was delivered Tuesday evening May 3, by the Rev. C. n. WRIGHT. The subject of the lecture was "CHARLES SUMNER." The early career of the distin guished statesman was reviewed, and the in fluences which moulded his character were admirably portrayed. The lecturer very elo quently told us of SUMNER, the reformer, the statesman, the martyr and ot his place in history. AM who heard this able and in teresting lecture were highly entertained, B. HALF A CENTURY AGO.—L. 11. SCOTT has handed us a copy of The Bradford Settler, '• printed and published by 11. A. KERR, at Towanda, Bradford county, Penn.," dated February 10, 1831. The sheet is a trifle larger than the REVIEW, and although tiic paper is of inferior quality and faded, the ink is still jet black, showing that a good quality of printer's ink was made and used fifty years ago. The first page is filled up with articles on the " Indian question," and certain laws before the legislature, with one short adver tisement, that of JOHN E. GElGEß,gunsmith, father and predecessor in business of our valued townsman J. V. GEIGER. The latest news is dated New York, Jan. 31, two weeks before publication. Now we can got nous from all parts of the civilized world, and have it printed in less than two hours. Maj. EZRA LONG of Troy inserts this char acteristic and unique advertisement: The subscriber will pay 50 cents for every sixty pounds of good corn, and 40 cts. for every 60 pounds of good rye, delivered at bis mill in Troy And to those indebted he would say, these are the last soft words and gentle means ttu-y need expect until pay ment is made.
