The Dn.ily Review. Towanda, Pa., Monday, April 18, 1881. ■IHTORS . ft. W. ALVOrtD. NOBLE X. ALVORD. M 19 ait p £ffre*rr " oniy 85 trnts per Vmom'Ji. TFry it. The Washington correspondent of the Philadelphia Dress says these pleasant words of the Senators from New York : Senator Piatt of New Y'ork impresses me well. lam glad of two points in him that are difllcnlt to combine in one man. First, that lie is strong in himself; sec ond that he harmonizes with Mr. Conk ling. I would be ashamed to rank among those zealous spirits who would like to see Mr. Conkling crushed. He is the greatest man in American politics to-day. And it is pleasant to note the fraternal way in which his new colleague goes and sits down by his side 111 the Senate chum ber for long, close talks during dull speeches. Mr Conkling is dramatic even in tetc-a-tete. It is born in him. He makes expressive gestures with his hands. Ills head nods gravely to empha size his words. He is always an inter esting figurej to watch—dainty, well groomed, pleasing to the eye. Father Time loves him in laying his slow hand upon him. Ilis thinning blonde rings of hair show the splendid contour of his head better than did their old luxuriance and the gray that softly mingles with them somewhat spiritualizes that proud, reticent face. The wife of a Western Seuator calls him"Tlie American Endym ion," but that doesn't more than half ex press him. He is a greater than Endym ion's author. He is, as our school-read ers said of Napoleon, "a sceptered her mit, wrapt in the solitude of his own orig inality. When seated beside him Senator I'latt Is not dwarfed by the vicinange, which is a good test of the man. In his own way, a business way, he too is a force. His Ability to comprehend and control intri cate details is said to be truly wonderful. He holds three presidencies—of the Unit ed States Express Company, the South ern Central Railroad, and the Owego National Bank. Mrs. Piatt,a large queen ly-looking lady,is with him at the Arling ton, ttud is an intimate friend of Mrs. James, wife of the Postmaster General. It is seldom that so handsome a woman graces Washington life, and at their home At Owego she is peculiarly esteemed and beloved. They will keep house next Winter. The Philadelphia Press says there is seemingly, a general movement through out the country, more or less distinctly marked in different localities, for an in crease in the present rate of wages. In the iron business this took place a year ago, resulting in a decided advance in the rates paid to puddlers and rolers, but that by no means insures us against a re petition of the agitation in this same de partment of iudustry this year The gen eral increase in the cost of living and the large, profits now reaped by employers not only justifies but necessitates a more liberal scale of remuneration to labor than obtained during the years of busi ness depression. This has been recog nized by many employers. Wages have in some instaces been raised volunta rily and in others the demand of the workmen for an increase has been acced ed to as soon as made. In some branch es of industry a struggle will doubtless cccur between employers and employed, which must result iu great loss both to individuals and to the public, only to be compromised at last with dissatisfaction aud hard feeling on both sides. It is ev ident that a demand for increased wages made on a rising market is pretty certain t>X success unless it is excessive. Trade unions, however, often defeat their own jiurpose by making their demands unrea- sonably large and displaying a dictato rial spirit which invites opposition. Every rise in the selling price of manu factured articles by no means justifies an instantaneous demand for increased wa ges. Employers bear the loss of a tem porary fail in prices as best they can and are entitled to such windfalls as may come in the way of sudden and transitory booms. Sliding scales make a happy provision for dividing profits and losses in these contingencies, but they are fea sible in but a few branches of industry.
