Til© 13a.il y Revievr. Towanda, Pa., Tuesday, April 5, 1881. EDITORS. B. W. ALVORD. NOBLE N. ALVORD. " Daily Bwior," enly aft ctmlt per month. Try it. The Philadelphia Press, under its new administration is fully equal to the New York papers. Mr. Smith has demonstra ted that a good daily can be supported in Pennsylvania, and he is making one every loyal citizen of this good old com monwealth ought to be proud of. That his efforts are appreciated is evidenced by the rapidly increasing circulation of the Frcss. We congratulate Philadelphia on the possession of so able and influen tial a journal. Many birds are killed daily by railroad trains. These victims are mostly pig eons, as these birds visit the track look ing for grain dropped from passing freight trains. The birds are generally killed by express trains, as, when they are feeding they do not make any attempt to rise until the train is almost upon them and then, before they can escape, they are struck by the upper part of the engine. If a male bird is killed, it is said that the female will leave the little ones to care for themselves, as she will not look for iood, and so, many young pigeons perish. A St. Louis dispatch gives Chaunccy I. Filley's version of the situation in Wash ington. Mr. Filley says that up to the time he left the National Capital he did not hear "any expression of the purpose of any tight being made by Mr. Conkling.' Further, that Mr. Conkling had "given no publicity to such intentions." Mr. Filley says: "The newspaper reports upon all these matters"—differences be tween Cabinet ofllcers, Senators and the President—"are exaggerated and colored to make them accord with the sources from which they emanate and to suit the parties in whose interests they are pro mulgated." Mr. Filley's statement prob ably comes nearer to the truth than any of the thousand and one senseless sensa tional rumors put afloat by Washington correspondents, and that portion of the llepublicau press which has seemed so ready to furnish aid and comfort to the Democrats will do well to make a note of what he says. It is very easy to fall into error, not only in the case of individuals but of na tions also. All evince a waekness for get ting into nets and by ways rather than follow the straigt formal track, and when once out of the proper groove or chaumel it is not so easy to gain an equilibrium and get the right bearings again. Appro pos of this we would speak of a general error, committed by so many of us and till persisted in right in the face of our betterjudgement and knowledge. That to which we allude, is the calling of the place at which tickets are sold, the cars stop, passengers enter and leave them, a "Depot," when that is not the right name at all and don't express the situation any more than to call a goose a cat or a circus a legislature. It is to be regretted that we Yankees with all our wits and good sense fell into this error, at the beginning of our rail roading in this country some 40 years ago. Station is the proper name of the institution and why not uso it, rather than strain up and borrow a French word, a sort of nondescript that don't jibe at all, we can't conceive. Station has always been in use in England as it should be here and we would do well to imitate our cousins in this particular, adopting the proper appelatiou. We notice with much satisfaction that the great Penu'a Central road has of late, come to the front, discarded the foreign production depot, and adopted in lieu the right term, Station; a movement, in J the right direction that will doubtless be followed by other lines and thus after awhile we will reach terra firma again.
