The Daily Review. Towanda, Pa., Monday, April 4, 1831. KDITOUS . 8. W. ALVORD. NOBLE N. ALVORD. " Daily JlrtiMrJ" only 85 cent* per month. fry it. The colored men of Louisiana present a statement, which, if true, must set at rest a great deal of the misrepresentation as to the shiftless habits of the freedmen. They claim that they have kept pace with honest labor in the other sections of the Union; that they now pay taxes on $25,- 000,000 worth of property, by their labor raise seven-eights of the sugar crop and five-sevenths of the cotton crop. Yet these are the men whom the lazy, god forsaken White Leaguers would deprive of the right to vote for the candidates of their choice, because they don't want to be put "on an equality with niggers." The honest, industrious colored men of the South can see in ihe Mahone move ment the beginning of a political revolu tion that will result in securing for them fair play, fair treatment and a fair vote. The superintendent of the New York Emigration Commission, Mr. 11. J, Jack so ', on duty at Castle Garden, is of the opinion that immigration to the United States the present year would reach nearly five hundred thousand persons to tho port of New York alone, with possi bly fifty thousand or more for the port of Boston, Philadelphia and Baltimore. This estimate is based on the arrivals for the past three months, which for January were 8,082, and for February 0,753. Judging from the nationality of those who have already arrived it is estimated that the Germans will be most largely represented, probably 175,000, and of good class to, such as farmers, for the most part with some means. The great er part have their destination fixed before leaving Europe, A unmber will go to Texas direct, On twenty acres of Lochiel farm, own ed by Senator J. D. Cameron, the ground being along the flats, there was raised last year eighty-five cases ot tobacco, four hundred pounds to the case. The crop is of the Glessner variety, famous for its fineness of texture, richness of color, and uniform largeness of leaf. It is not often that the same amount of to bacco is raised on a like number of acres. The eighty-five cases of four hundred pounds each makes a total er#p value of $5,000 for twenty acres of land. This is without doubt the largest yield of tobacco on the same amount of land ever cased in Pennsylvania. The Catholic Bishop of Raphoe, writ, ing to a member of the Committee of the Dublin Mansion House Relief Fund, states that he has tried to impress upon Mr. Childers, War Secretary f and other English statesmen who have visited Ire land in order to study the wants of the country, that the Government could easily provide for the reclamation of waste lands. He says he believes they could, by this means, scatter the people abroad from the overcrowded districts and obviate the necessity of emigration for less than an extensive scheme of Govern ment emigration would cost! Information from Los Vegas, New Mexico, reports that James Carrie, the murderer of Porter, the actor, was fatally shot March 24th. Currie was 011 a drunk en spree and threatened to kill several people. A bartender shot him. The railroad hands attempted to lynch the bartender but the sheriff got liim to jail. The coroner's jury rendered a verdict of self-defence. * Friday morning Win.Kinsley was mak ing dynamite caetridges in an engine house at Heidelberg Slope, near Pleasant Valley, and had a string of them around his neck. The cartridges exploded, tear ing Hinsley to pieces, William Williams, the engineer, was seriously injured, the house was demolished and machinery de stroyed. The loss is heavy. Business Cards.
