Governor Neil, of Idaho, represents that the Mormon polygainists are making rapid strides to the attainment of power on the Pacific coast. Not content with the complete control of Utah, they are in vading Colorado, Nevada, Arizona, Idaho New Mexico and Wyoming, and unless the Government is willing that these ne farious practices should be thus extended and made prevalent through all that Western region, it is high time steps were taken to prevent it. The best pro tection of polygamy thus far has been its weakness. It has been suffered to re main undisturbed under the impression that if let alone it would sooner or later die a natural death. Nothing would more surely tend t.o end its career than the im pression that the Mormons were becom ing any way formidable. It is certainly impolitic, even under the let-alone theory to allow them to extend their power to other Territories than Utah, and Govern or Neil does well in calling attention to their encroachment on Idaho. Barnes Greeley, a brother of Horace, relates this incident: "When Lincoln was elected I took a notion that I would like to have the appointment of mail agent on one of our local roads. The salary was SI,OOO a year, which was a big thing for me. 1 know Horace could get me the appointment. 1 spent some money traveling around and getting recom mendations, and I succeeded in getting what 1 thought was sulßcicnt. 1 had letters from a number of leading business men along the route, as well as from the party men, and those I, forwarded to Horace, with a letter asking him to help me. What do you suppose he did? lie wrote back, returning my recommenda tions, with the informaton, penned in his own hand, that he could get the appoint ment for me without the slightest trouble but that he didn't want to do it. He wanted me to stick to the farm. He said I was the only boy at home, and he thought it best that I should stay there. I wrote back and explained to him that I could be at home quite frequently; that at that time the salary of SI,OOO a year would help me out very considerably; that another party had ottered to take the position for SSOO a year. 1 wound up by urging him to help me to the appoint ment. His reply was this: 'lf another man otters to do this service for SSOO, and you expect §I,OOO, that is an excellent reason why you should not have it. If ou had It the Government would be losing SSOO a year. In the same letter he made me this proposition : 'Stay on the old farm, and if I do not raise more corn this year on two acres than you do on ten acres I will give you sloo.' Not being in a position to better myself, I staid on the farm and accepted his proposition. I picked out ten acres of as good ground as I had and planted it to corn, lie plant ed two acres. When we measured up in the fall I had beaten him just twenty-five bushels of ears, and he sent me his check for $100." p"OH Hair Cat and Shave G# • tii# WARD IIOUSK SHAVING PARLOR STEDGE I# there.
