Senator Davis, now the richest man in West Virginia, was once a railroad brake man. A. S. Abell, of the Baltimore Sun, has bought ten thousand acres of orange land in Florida. The Western Iron Association have re ducced their card rate from $4 to cb. 20. Twenty-two thousand immigrants land ed in New York during the month of March. The Western Iron Association has unanimously resolved that the card rate should be reduced to three-twenty on Monday. The steamship Braunschweig from Breinqn, brought 1,500 emigrants, the largest number ever landed in Baltimore from one voyage. In Prussia one person in every four hundred and fifty Is insane. A Berlin scientist attributes this large proportion to intemperance among the lower class, and to educational cramming in early years among others. In a debate on the Army Appropriation bill in the House yesterday, great excib - ment was caused by Mr. Sparks denounc ing Mr. Clvnier as a liar. Subsequently Mr. Sparks made an apology to Mr. Cly iner and the House. In the case of Mrs. Ferguson against the Manhattan Life Insurance Company to recover a £IO,OOO pi 1 ey on the life ' f her husband. The jury rendered a ver dict for the plaintiff. The defense was that Ferguson committed suicide. But it was proved that he was insane. They made a rone and attempted to scale the wall When half way up the rope broke and they fell back and were badly injured. An alarm was given, and they were captur ed. Some of the Democratic papers in the West Branch section are urging the nom ination of Judge Charles A. Mayer for Supreme Judge. Judge Mayer was pro minently named for the position In 1877, but he declined to allow his name to go before the convention, as Colonel Noves, also of Clinton county, was a candidate for State Treasurer. The Connecticut Republican State Con vention at New-Heven chose delegates to the National Convention at Chicago. A slight effort was made to obtain an ex pression of the views of the Convention in regard to the Presidential candidate, but it met with little encouragement; and a resolution was adopted urging the vigor ous and loyal support of the nominees of the Republican National Convention. A man calling himself George M. Jones, of Boston, but who is believed to be Ed win Smith, of Philadelphia, was picked up on the street in New York, on Wed nesday. One of his legs was broken, and he claimed that he had robbed. He was taken to the hospital, and yesterday shot himself through the heart. He appeared to be a man of culture and means, and had engaged passage to Europe on the steam er which sailed Wednesday. Powell & Co.
