The News Condensed.
Mrs. Tyler, the widow of the cx-I'rcsi
dent, is now living quietly at Georgetown.
She is a devoted Roman Catholic.
Miss Florence Nightingale is a great
invalid, and rarely leaves her room : yet
there are few busier women in the world.
She is never idle.
The steamer "City of Mexico." with
General Grant and party on board, arrived
in Galveston safely shortly after noon
yesterday. There was general rejoicing
over the news.
Representative Phelps has introduced a
Dill providing lor the free passage of Irish
emigrants on the return voyage of the
ship Constellation, now about to start to
Ireland with provisions for the suffering
peasantry of ihat island.
The Greenbackers met in State Con
vention iu Jlarrisburg yesterday. Hoi .
\Y. C. Pluinnier, of Crawford county, was
chosen temporary chairman, and F. \V.
Hughes, permanent President. Without

adjourned until evening.
The United States Circuit Court ol
California has decided the law recent 1\

Chinese by corporations is unconstitu
tional. The case will probably be taken
to the United States Supreme. Court,
Gci.cral B. Butler having announced his
willingness to manage the case there, for
the opponents of the Chinese.
The Albany Evening Journal celebrated
its tillieth anniversary Monday, by invit
ing the veteran journalist Thurlow Weed,
its founder, to the editorial chair loug
enough to introduce it to the second half
century uf its existence —which all will
wish, as do we, may be as prosperous and
inliuunti.il for the right as the tlrst hill
has been.
Tlie majority report of the Senate Com
mittee on Pii\il:gei aid Elections in
favor of giving Mr. Kellogg's scat to Mr.
Spofford, was presented yt strrday. Sen
ator Hoar presented the minority report,
denouncing the proposed outrage us a
crime to be (lassed with the tiring on
Fort Sumter. Senator Keilogg delivered
a .'calling speei h charging Mr. Hill with
making false statements.
A bill was introduced by Mr. Kirkwood
in the Senate to enable the Commissioner
of Agriculture to test, the practicability of
manufacturing sugar on a large scnle
from sorghum and sugar cane.
The House committee on Ways and
Means has decided to report favorably the
bill reducing the duty on bi-chromate oi
potash Iroin four to two cents per pound,
and to place chrome iron ore upon the
tree list. i
Representative Shallcnberger, of this
state has secured the passage of the Seu- j
ate bill relative to the international exlii-j
bition of sheep, w 00l and wool products, j
to be held in the Centennial buildings at 1
Philadelphia in September, under the aus- !
pices of the Pennsylvania Agricultural
Society. The bill allows the importation
free of duty, of all articles intended sole
ly for exhibition on the occasion named.
It directs the Commissioner of Agricul
ture to attend Ihe cxhibl,lon in person,
and to make a full report upon it. The
success of the exhibition is believed by
its promoters to be already assured.
Japan, Canada, and New South Whiles
and other parts of Australia will be cred
itably raprcsented.
