dent, is now living quietly at Georgetown.

Miss Florence Nightingale is a great

The steamer "City of Mexico." with
General Grant and party on board, arrived
in Galveston safely shortly after noon
yesterday. There was general rejoicing
over the news.
Representative Phelps has introduced a

ship Constellation, now about to start to
Ireland with provisions for the suffering
peasantry of ihat island.

Tlie majority report of the Senate Com
mittee on Pii\il:gei aid Elections in
favor of giving Mr. Kellogg's scat to Mr.
Spofford, was presented yt strrday. Sen
ator Hoar presented the minority report,
denouncing the proposed outrage us a

Fort Sumter. Senator Keilogg delivered

A bill was introduced by Mr. Kirkwood
in the Senate to enable the Commissioner
of Agriculture to test, the practicability of
manufacturing sugar on a large scnle
from sorghum and sugar cane.
The House committee on Ways and
Means has decided to report favorably the
bill reducing the duty on bi-chromate oi
potash Iroin four to two cents per pound,
and to place chrome iron ore upon the
tree list. i
Representative Shallcnberger, of this
state has secured the passage of the Seu- j
ate bill relative to the international exlii-j
bition of sheep, w 00l and wool products, j
to be held in the Centennial buildings at 1
Philadelphia in September, under the aus- !
pices of the Pennsylvania Agricultural
Society. The bill allows the importation
free of duty, of all articles intended sole
ly for exhibition on the occasion named.
It directs the Commissioner of Agricul
ture to attend Ihe cxhibl,lon in person,
and to make a full report upon it. The
success of the exhibition is believed by
its promoters to be already assured.
Japan, Canada, and New South Whiles
and other parts of Australia will be cred
itably raprcsented.
