Congressman Cofforth, of this state is seriously ill with diphtheria. Kimble and Salter arc to be sentenced 011 29th inst. General Grant, it is reported, will go to the Sandwich Islands next. Colonel and Mrs. T. A. Scott are about to go to Europe again, it is said, and intend to stay there a long time. Cardinal McCloskey celebrated yester day the thirty-sixth anniversary of his elevation to the episcopacy. The Candi dal was consecrated a bishop in the old eathedral in Mott St. in 1844. W. O. Bigelow, Portmaster at Annap olis has been arrested charged with hav ing hypothecated in New-York postage stamps to the amount of about $4,800 be longing-to the United States. A railway company in Italy lately ad vertised for a thousand servants at 1.80 francs (3G cents) a day, and 28,000 ap plication were received. Kangaroo leather is attracting some at tention as a substitute for morocco, in the manufacture of ladies' shoes. It is said to be waterproof, and very durable, when of good quality. The most extensive bee farm in the world is probably near lieeton, Canada. It covers four acres,and last year the own er secured 03,000 pounds of liouey from his 19,000,000 little workers. The first pianos manufactured in the Unitod States were made in Boston, 1822, since which time the instrument has been greatly improved and brought to its pres ent state of perfection. Emil J. Petroff,' a member of the State legislature, was yesterday convicted in the Court of Dauphin county, of corrupt solicitation of tallow legislators. This is a victory for law and purity at Harris burg, and should have a wholesome eft'eet. Bullion estimated at about $200,000 was stolen fnn the Union Pacific express of fice at Sidney, Neb., on the 10th, but the treasure has been recovered, except $13,- 000. It was found under a pile of coal near the Union Pacific track,where a trackman had seen thcr robbers conceal something in the afternoou. Congress continues to receive petitions aud memorials asking for the enactment of a National bankrupt law. Yesterday Mr. Morton presented in the House the petition of Messrs. Low, Ilarriman&Co., Lewis Brothers & Co., and forty other mercantile firms of New York, praying for the passage of such a law. There are about five thousand China men in New-York and vicinity at present, and it is said to be likely that five thous and more will be brought east to engage in various labors. It appears that a Mrs. Martha Wilson, whose cousin is a wife of Yung Wing, vice consul for Chiua at Washington, are about to engage actively in a move to bring the Chinese east, par ticularly to New York and Philadelphia. A dispatch from Bismark dated th 10th says : '-The first mail received here since Feburary 15 arrived last night. Teams went out for seventy miles East, where a train is blockaded. Twenty passengers also reached here overland. The letter mail brought consisted of fourteen fdil pouches. About three tons of papers are still ou the train, which, owing to the ice on the track, is not expected this week. Once clear, and the Northern Pa ciflc will have no trouble. The citizens arc short of provisions, and are being supplied by Commissioners at Fort Licholn. There is not a pound ol flour in the city. The damago to busi ness is very great." Eight members of the "salvation army" have just arrived at Castle Garden from London. Seven of them are plain looking women aged nnout thirty, and the other is a man aged thirty-two. One of the women is called captain and the others lieutenants. The man has the title of commissioner. The women wear derby hats and the man a cap, and around tin? crown of each is a silk band with the words, "The salvation army" in gold let ters upon it. The party is a delegation from the sal vation army of London, and is to begin out-of-doors religious work in this coun try, commencing in New York.
