A railway company in Italy lately ad
vertised for a thousand servants at 1.80
francs (3G cents) a day, and 28,000 ap
plication were received.
Kangaroo leather is attracting some at
tention as a substitute for morocco, in
the manufacture of ladies' shoes. It is
said to be waterproof, and very durable,
when of good quality.
The most extensive bee farm in the
world is probably near lieeton, Canada.
It covers four acres, and last year the own
er secured 03,000 pounds of liouey from
his 19,000,000 little workers.
The first pianos manufactured in the
Unitod States were made in Boston, 1822,
since which time the instrument has been
greatly improved and brought to its pres
ent state of perfection.
Emil J. Petroff,' a member of the State
legislature, was yesterday convicted in
the Court of Dauphin county, of corrupt
solicitation of tallow legislators. This is
a victory for law and purity at Harris
burg, and should have a wholesome
eft'eet.
Bullion estimated at about $200,000 was
stolen fnn the Union Pacific express of
fice at Sidney, Neb., on the 10th, but the
treasure has been recovered, except $13,-
000. It was found under a pile of coal near
the Union Pacific track, where a trackman
had seen thcr robbers conceal something
in the afternoou.
Congress continues to receive petitions
aud memorials asking for the enactment
of a National bankrupt law. Yesterday
Mr. Morton presented in the House the
petition of Messrs. Low, Ilarriman&Co.,
Lewis Brothers & Co., and forty other
mercantile firms of New York, praying for
the passage of such a law.
There are about five thousand China
men in New-York and vicinity at present,
and it is said to be likely that five thous
and more will be brought east to engage
in various labors. It appears that a Mrs.
Martha Wilson, whose cousin is a wife of
Yung Wing, vice consul for Chiua at
Washington, are about to engage actively
in a move to bring the Chinese east, par
ticularly to New York and Philadelphia.
A dispatch from Bismark dated th 10th
says : '-The first mail received here since
Feburary 15 arrived last night. Teams
went out for seventy miles East, where a
train is blockaded. Twenty passengers
also reached here overland. The letter
mail brought consisted of fourteen fdil
pouches. About three tons of papers are
still ou the train, which, owing to the
ice on the track, is not expected this
week. Once clear, and the Northern Pa
ciflc will have no trouble.
The citizens arc short of provisions,
and are being supplied by Commissioners
at Fort Licholn. There is not a pound ol
flour in the city. The damago to busi
ness is very great."
Eight members of the "salvation army"
have just arrived at Castle Garden from
London. Seven of them are plain looking
women aged nnout thirty, and the other
is a man aged thirty-two. One of the
women is called captain and the others
lieutenants. The man has the title of
commissioner. The women wear derby
hats and the man a cap, and around tin?
crown of each is a silk band with the
words, "The salvation army" in gold let
ters upon it.
The party is a delegation from the sal
vation army of London, and is to begin
out-of-doors religious work in this coun
try, commencing in New York.
It appears that the salvation army work
lias baen successful in Loudon, and is well
endorsed in England.
