FAKMER'S COLUMX. J'itteu. Tlio secret of making tcuoel lmtter i.s cleanliness and tlior ouulmess, and the time fur the most r jitalIe exercise of the art of but-ter-makinr is June. The grass is almmhuit, the cows in full milk, the weather favorable. The milk should not be kept -too cool, though this is rarely a tault in dailies. It is cnuiurh if it be kept as cool as CO degrees Fahrenheit, though 5.3 de rives is not too cool. Cream will rie at about this temperature better than at any other, and the same is best at which to churn. ALilk should stand where the air is sweet and fresh ; odors from the kitchen or from the stable, or odors of any kind, indeed, except that of fresh air, should be carefully excluded, fct one floors are desirable, for these can be kept constantly moist and so much cooler than others, and the air ought to circulate freely over and uikW the pans. Shallow pans are b.-4ter than deep ones. Work out the buttermilk without touching the hands to the butter, using as little Mater as possible, or none at all. If the buttermilk is all out, and with it all the milk, sugar and cheesy purtioir"? ot the milk, butter will keep with very little salt. The more impel feet the working, the more salt is required. In keeping cream several days, put it where the temperature will be uniform and cool, and stir well if more added. Profit ok I'iaxting IU ta agas. When land lies near large cities and is dear, those crops should be raised which, owing to the distance from a market will require a heavy expenditure in the transportation. All roots are of this character. When carefully cultivated they pro duce largely and are very profitable. IJuta bagas, though they can scarce ly be considered a marketable pro dm tion, is still a valuable crop to raise for winter feeding to cattle. Th.y afford not. only good health and are fat-producing, but to dairy caitle thev are productive of an ad ditional How of milk and consequent ly of butter. The ground for the crop should be plowed early in June, say ten iiit hes deep, rolled and harrowed thoroughly, then formed into ridges, going two rounds with the plow to each ridge. The ridges should be lightly robed, and the seed, about one pound to the acre, drilled in. When about three inches high the plants should be thinned out to from eight to ten inches apart, and kept chi'r of weeds; a couple of hocings will be suliicient. The crop is har vested in November, and stored in a bam-cellar, or buried in the licld to use as required. From six hun dred to nine hundred bushels are raised to the acre. ( icrmanto'n Tel. As this is Tin: season for trans planting manure from the farm vards to the lields and gardens, it would, perhaps, not be amiss tore mind farmers of the beneficial ef fects of an addition of burnt lime to every cart load of manure. Such an addition not only improves all kinds of dung, but it conserves it also, and contributes considerably to a rich harvest. The lime may be cither thinly sprinkled on the ma nure, or mixed with the same im mediately before carrying it out to the fields. When stronr-smellinc manure is used, as, for instance, un mixed excrements, an addition of u little"? chloride of lime will be found hiuhiv useful. To rur.sEin i: Eocs. The best method I know of to preserve eggs, says a correspondent of an exchange, is to till the pores of the shell with fresh clean lard, so as to exclude all air. It is my opinion that this sim ple and easy method is preferable to any now in use. Some put them in lime. lhit the lime cooks them, so they have a dried appear ance ; salt has a similar effect while eggs saturated with lard, as far as my experience goes, open fresh and nice. Oi.o Hay ought not to be left to form the bottom of the mow, but pr.t somewhere, where it can be got at conveniently at any time. At tills time, also, do anv necessary re pairs of those parts w hich were cov ered up when much hay and grain were in store ; and in rainv days. Tin: State Fair of the Pennsylva nia State Agricultural Soc iety will be held at F.aston on the I'othtith, t!7th. and I'Sth, of September next. Great improvement In Sewing 31aclilnes.
