Schon vor 60 Jahren hat der berühmte englische Physiker Fara day, dessen geniale Experimentirkunst lagert werden, beim Erhitzen einen namhaften Grad von Durchsichtigkeit annehmen. Jetzt hat Professor Tur ner diese Eigenschaft beim Gold und Silber sowie bei einigen anderen Me wird ein Goldplättchen von einem Hundertsünfzigtausendstel Centimeter Stärke bei einer Temperatur von 660 Grad Celsius für einige Augenblicke durchsichtig. Diese Erscheinung ist von der physilalischen und chemischen Be schaffenheit des Mediums, worin sich das Blättchen befindet, unabhängig. Beim Silber liegt der Fall wesentlich anders. Hier zeigen sich große Unter schiede je nach der Beschaffenheit der umgebenden Atmosphäre. Ein Blätt chen von einem Sechzigtausendstel Cen timeter Stärke bleibt undurchsichtig, solange es sich in einer reduzirenden Atmosphäre, etwa von Wasserftoff- oder Kohlenoxydgas befindet. In der Luft wird es dagegen bei 240 Grad durchscheinend und bei 3SO Grad völ lig durchsichtig.
