He 'calls it magnesium light SoiiE one has said the Reading deal represents a face plant of $G00,- 000,000, but thnt the concern could be duplicated for $300,000,000. Report is that a silver pool works the price of silvur to suit their spec. ulatite purposes every time govern- xnsnt buys silver bullion. Tb.3 way ... - -i iii to stop speculation in silver aau goiu i to pass a free coinage act. London claims to be the financial aid civilized cen!f r of the world, and yet right there it is said that one woman in every sixty i a gin-drink- r, one in every twenty a pauper, and one in thirteen illiterate. Amass meeting of the political opponents of Governor Hill of York State was held in Now York City last Thursday Ilill and Cleveland are making democratic far flv in York S.'ate. They are both presidential candidates. Stok speculating circles were wild with excitement in Philadelphia last "Wednesday and Thurday over the announcement that the Philadelphia and Heading railroad had acquired control of two railroads, the Lie high Valley road and the New Jwsey Central. The Ddla-n.tors were put upon trial last week for embezzlement, on a cbargo of hiving taken money on deposit, when they knew they were insolvent. It appeared that they as signed what property they had to preferred creditors relatives on the piorning of the day that their bank deed. They were wild cat finan ciers. fix hundred bushels of wheat hare been contributed by Union cpunty farmers for starving people in Russia. What a contrast between thfir act and the act of Democratic congressmen who refused to grant government permission to use one of her vse!s to crry the contributions of American citizens across the sea t-trvinr Russians. -The men who are against silver at moriey, say, what a dishonest trans action for government to buy silver in bar at lets thn one dollar, and thn stamp it and make it a legal tender dollar, but the stme class of men do not say a word about govern ment buying paper that costa less than a cent a slip, and then stamp the notes iu various sums as $1, $10, $100fl000, and make them a legal teader. - - a - The Ra-ling railroad company's leao for 9'.)Q years, of the Lehigh Valley, Jersey Central and Dulanare Jjackawanna and Western railroads, gives to .the Reading combination, control of the coal output of the An thracite region, with transportation rights which forever closes that sec tion of the country against the en terprise of t ho individual operator. Tu'c whub Inle, mining and trans portation, is completely in the hands 01 tue It. -tiling. lLo probability is, the transaction will be run through the courts to test the constitutional ity of the deal. GEJVERJL JVEWS ITEMS. An earth quake shock at Trenton, N. J., last Thursday scared people and no wonder for it was severe enough to shake the houses rattle dishes and stop clacks. A Contented Farmer - From the Dotroit Tribane. Tom Reed tells a story of a Neb raska farmer who, traveling through Maine, happened to stop at a little house hanging from the bide of a rocky hill, which constituted the farm. During his stay he made many cutting criticisms upon the character of the soil, and asked the farmer why he did not go West, where the land was so rich that you could thrust yonr arm into it up to your! shoulder and pull from the bottom dirt as rich as guano. "I want to know," said the farmer, "and where may such lands bet" "Where I live in the Wrest," was the reply, "which is in Blank town ship, Blank county, Neb.'' ' I reckon I have a mortgage on some of that land," replied the Maine man.' And he thereupon brought out an old tin box and showed mort gages on half the farms in the town ship. -4'I bonght these mortgages," lie went on "with what I made off bit frui here, and as long as you fellows pav the interest I gness I will Stay:,. . Bloomfield Ledger: The large school house at Blain was destroyed by fire last Friday night. The fire wts started by the fall of a large bang ing lamp which exploded and spread the burning oil. The building at the time was occupied by the band who wf-re having a festival and the room was crowded with people all of whom got out in safely. The band lott their instruments, together with all other property in the build ing. There was an insurance of $800 on the building and $200 on the school furniture in the North America Company. Fell Through a Bridge Huntingdon Globe: Howard Yar nell, agod 33 years, of near Barree, was drowned in the Juniata river on Saturday afternoon while returning to his home in company with his father. The county bridge at Barree whih was swept away by the June flood of 1SS9, has never bten rebuilt, and since then pedestrians have beea obliged to use the Diamond Valley railroad bridge. The stream at this poiut is particularly turbulent and deep, and at the present time greatly swollen by the inciting snow on the mountains en either side of it. Mr. Yarnell was walking a little in ad vance of his son on foot boards at the side of the bridge. Howard, the son, amused himself by walking on the Ftringer which support the rails. He was admonishad by his father to take to the foot board, but he kept walking on the perilous stringer, which was made doubly dangerous by its thin coating of ice. Suddenly his feet slipped and he fell tbreugh the bridge to the water below, a dis tance of fifteen feet. He quickly rose to the surf-ice and battled brave ly for bis life, but the swift current carried him rapidly down and he per rished bt.fore help could be extended. His body was recovered a few hours a'terward and removed to his home. Ha leaves a wife and several children. Laterly ha had been working in the vicinity of McConneUstown as a teamster. Harriet E. Hall of Waynetown, Ind., says: "I owe my life to the grrat South American Nervine. I had been in bed for five months from the effects cf an exhausted Stomach, Indigestion, Nervous prostration and a general shattered condition ef my whole system. Had given up ad hopes of getting well. Had tried t'. ree doctors with no relief. The first bottle of the Nervine Tonic im proved me so much that I was able to walk about and a few bottles cur ed me entirely. I believe it is the best medicine in the world. I can not recommend it to highly." Trial bottles, 154. Sold by L. Banks & Co. May 14-ly. - a - - A Serlen of Three Special Ex. curelons lo Washington, R. C, Tla Pennsylvania Kullroad.
