Rotation "Why is rotation necesary ?" This is a frequent inquiry with practical man.— Supposing a crop carries off certain speci' fled amount of inorganic substance irom the soil, caeh of which is indispenaible to its developement, it follows as a mat ter of course, that the cultivation oi the crop, for several consecutive years, will abstract so far from the cupply in the soil, as ultimately to deprive it of the power of producing it. Kut all crops do not ex haust the soil of the special substance and hence if we cultivate ludian corn for a couple of years iusucession, on one field, and then potatoes, turnips, peas, beans or carrots, we shall find that the latter are by no means stultifiied Irom any lack to nutriment —each finding ita appropri ate aliment, and in sufficient quantities to insure its healthy growth and n>atu ration. There are many organic sub stances in the soil which the corn plant, does not specially require,or appropriate, and which are consequently not exhaus ted by its cultivation; while each of them arc essential to the growth of some ve getable. Ilence it is that when these are grown alternately, the productive powers of the soil are not so rapidly exhausted, and fertility is kept up by a sott of reeup> erative process; the organic element nec. cessary for the dovelopement of one crop. having time to accumulate while the soil, is occupied by another crop by which they are not required. In many sections of our country the In dian corn crop is ono of prime importance consequently it is frequently cultivated for two, or three and even four years in succession, on the same field, but I have observed whenever this practice has been injudiciously adopted, that, aftor the third Heason, generally after the second, there is]an obvious falling off, even when liberal manuring is adopted. Very few farm ers, therefore, who consult their own in, terests, and who have had the benefit of experience and observation, are found to l'avor it either in theory or practice. By adopting a judicious system of rcc. tation, and adhering rigidly to it, with the asistance of copious manuring—re> turning to the soil more, if possible than the crops carry off—any laud may be re» tained in a condition of high fertility; while by nil oppesite course, it will as cer, tainly be exhausted and"run out." It is a priucipal with me never to tempt the cultivation of a crop which I cannot afford to manure well, and this shouid be the policy of (.very farmer.— One had better run in debt for manure than exhaust his soil by cropping with~ out it, or, perhaps, had better suffer his land to rest until manure can be made.— Germantown Telegraph• EGO TOAST. —Out thick slices of stale bread —if very hard and dry, dip them for a moment in boiling wa ter, and drain. Have ready eggs bea ten very light, with a grain of flour 111; roll the slices in this, the flour will make it adhere. Have ready a frying-pan, in wh'ch is boiling hard, butter, with a little lard, say one third of the latter; lay in the slices and they will soon brown. Serve hot, an:l eat with pepper and salt. Some use boiling ham fat, instead the butter and lard. You might try it both Ways. GUF.EX TOMATO PJCKJ.ES. —Cut in slices ono peck of green tomatoes, about 3 an inch in tnickoess; salt them and let them lie hours. Then drain and press dry with a towl- Cut six large onion into thin rings. Take pound English mustard seed, black pepper, ono ounce allspice, one ounce cloves half ounce ground ginger—mix Bpiccs. To PROTECT SUKEP FROM DOGS. — If sheep are kept in the same lot with cows or fat cattle, no dogs will disturb them. As soon as the dogs approach the sheep, they run to the cattle, who drive off the dogs. A farmer for thirty years, in Shelby county, by adopting this plan, never lost a sheep by dogs, although dogs killed sheep on the farms north and south of him.— Rural Gentleman. —Orchards grown from root grafts are short lived, and never can be profitable. Plant only stock-grafted trees. YANKEE SOLDIERS IN MEXICO. — About a year ago, Col. George M.
