Pomological DiScofery The science of froit eultfcre -has taken rapid stridos during the past few years, particularly in this country but nowhere, perhaps, is it followed BO assiduously and enthusiastically as in Holland, and the ces of the Ilhinaland. The latest, and certainly the most curious discovery in this line has re cently been made by a Flemish gard ener of Ghent, who, after long and presistent experiment;, lias actually if we may believo the authority of Galignani —succeeded in giving to any kind of fruit the flavor he pleas es while it is still on the tree. Let us take an apple for instance; he pricks it rather deeply in four or five plaees with a large needle, and then let it dip for a while in a bowl con taining a liquid possessing the flavor he wishes to communicate. After a few seconds this liquid will have pen etrated the pulps; and this opperation being repeated two or three times, at intervals of eight or ten days, the apple is left to ripen on the tree, and will subsequently be found to have acquired the ta»te either of strawber ry, raspberry, cloves,4c., according to the liquid employed. This may be very extraordinary; but where is the good, after all, of making an apple taste like a strawber ry, or vice versa? People value a fruit for its own peculiar flavor; they eat apples be cause they like the taste of apples, and strawberrics.for a similar reason. However, though the Flemish gardener's process is scarcely a prac tical improvement in a gastronomic sense, yet, from a scientific point of view, it is a very curious and interess ting experiment. Avengers. The signs portend that Maximillian Avengcrism is going to havo a run, and that very naturally, considering the sup posed relation between the Mexican usury pation and the rebellion, the movement will be uiost lively in the Southern States. Organizations aro already formed and forming, in great numbers, presenting different characters and aiming at differs ent specific ends, but all intended,in some way or other, to regenerate Mexico, to untangle her political parties and to thois oughly set all her affairs "to rights."— The arrangements embrace the collection of arms, and drilling in the use of them, and ultimately at the earliest possible period, an entrance into Mexico, and a fight with any body that shows any dis position to iudulge in one. Of courso, these expeditions spring from the most disinterested motives.— Nothing but the good of an unhappy country, lying at the mercy of its own people, is the aim. The avengers, gen. erally and collectively, arc animated by nothing else than the genuine American, Monroe, Democratic, Republican sedi ment. Money is "n0 objie," at Mr. Ward would express it, eithor here or there, that this country or in Mexico.— So it was with the Irish Republic, and yet, somehow, the prospects of the Irish Republic were reported by its managers brilliant or gloomy, according as the cash came into their hands freely or scantily. It is probable that this movement will cause some money to change hands and perhaps some men to change worlds.— But it can amount to nothing against Mexico, unless in default of honest and vigorous execution of our laws by our own Government. A few persons in diff erent localities will have an opportunity of making something out of the cxcite mont and liborality that it produces.— Some may get to Mcxioo and have colli.-s ions with some of the armed forees ui i der one faction or another. But if our Government does its duty, these expedis tions will bo prevented from invading the neighboring country. It there is to be intervention let our Government itself make it an honorable and open way.— Private, clandestine movements can be regarded only as of a brigandish charac ter in themselves, as well as involving indignity to our Government. And mcst absurdly inconsistent is this one, proceed ing from our Republican country to es\ pousc an interest in Mexico which is con tradictory to all our sentiments and tra>. ditions—to avenge a person who, while we lament his unhappy and violent death, must bo deemed an intruder and usurper. —Pitts. Com. BEST HOKSES FOR FARM USE.— The hardest work on the farm for horses is breaking up sod which cer tainly is not one eighth of the whole work. Light Lorses, weighing 1,100 or 1,200 are best for most of the other work; they are best on the road, and before the harrow, (not before the mower and reaper, we think.) — At cross plowing and harrowing a coach horse will do onesforth more than a heavy draft horse. Besides it cost much more to keep the heavy horse, and on sandy, or wet soil, he sinks so much as to worry him. For all use which the farmer has for horses, the modium sized or coach horses are the best. — Cor. Rural New Yorker. —A correspondent in Queenstown, Ireland, writing on the 29th of June, says: From the official return for the past three months, upwards of sixteen thousand emigrants left hero for the United States, being two thousand in excess of the number of the corre sponding period of last year. Near ly half of this number went away by "prepared" tickots. There appears no tendency to a decrease in the exodus. —Seventy thousand candles were Tised in lighting the Hotel de Ville at tho municipal ball, given by the Emperors Alexander and Napoleon recently, and nealy a thousand black broadcloth coats were ruined by drip ping wax. 1867. 1867. INTESTINAL WORMS Are among the first to undermine the constitution In the list of BMM. They often occasion severe disease, ending sometimes fatally, particularly when they as cend to the stomach. Their presence in their most or dinary situation is attended with unfavorable effects upon the general health. EMINENT MEN ASSERT That all are more or less troubled with worms, and that many die annually from this cause, who, by the timely administration of a proper remedy would be saved. As FELLOWS' WORM LOZENGES may be taken without any unpleasant results, and as most children are fond of them, their use is recommended to those apparently healthy, and thus dispel the cause of what would pro duce suffering.
