The Division Question. We are awar- that the title of this editorial will to some readers be distasteful -like A thrien Jd Ule. Teitnf the dun er if drw rj tnnn," for we have written columns np"n columns upon the subject, until most of those n it per sonally interested are wearied cf it. We had supposed that with the triumph t .Messrs. Hsu-sas and Cxiwroan, and the presence ufj Corresponding Editor, Stale Treasurer elect, Doorkeepers, &..., :.i iiarribnrg tacked by OVER THKKE-l'irniS of liiep.opK's voices, expressed by petition the l.r'tle woa'.J be fought out Mere, nnd require nn more ink-shed at home. We learn however, that the compa rative silence of the Chronicle has been taken as an evidence of !ufwarmnes in the eauee in Lt irisburg, and that its enemies and jUiin friends have so represented it. It is also urged that there are many who need information, or a renewal of facts once known, to be able to understand the present position of the questi on. Fur these reasons, we trust nur distant readers and those mho care not how the mat ter turns, will have a little patience until this lueal question is decided. First, then, when this county was ereete l as will be seen by the several ac-s of Assem bly, and the report of Dr. Wiilets in the I.rs s laiure in the year 1813 and a majority of the people wcro opposed to the site chosen (or County Uuildtirs. The population, hox ever, being not one-third its present number, and having just been heavily taxed for the erection ol Court H use, Jail, and Connty offic es, (see sections 3. 3. 10. of ihe act of Sltd March, 1813,) the question was permitted to lie away, until new buildings should be re quired and another generation should come upon the statue of action. The situation .f New Berlin, the pr-sent county seat, i geographically centra', but very rhlhcult of access to three-fourths of those hav ing business there. The north end f the e "unty ia drained by liutfatoe creek and its tributaries, on which, at its mouth, and along fiff fffWS'.ft1iAMburE.V.f &. en.lSf side of the eountv is in like manner drained hT MidJUtrrek and opon it, at Fre-burg, and aiong the River, the great mass of its business is done. New Berlin is in the midst of moun tains and hiils, unapproachable to most who visit it wrhout encountering great difficulties, and has no business worth mentioning excep ting that caused by its position as the seat of j'istiee. Two years ago, the people of N Berlin took the first step by petitioning the Grand Ju ry towards requiring the Commissioners to erect new County Buildings. Thereupon the people North and South mired the question which had lain dormant thirty years, an i pe. t.-.ioned the Legislatures the number of S.SO0 to dii 'it the co'inty, according to the great Na titral an.1 business division already rvtsting, ana wiuen may lie seen on ar,y f ul map . f ftjme 1,330 alsy remonstrated aainst same. The question being new, and the Ses sion ndvanceit.our Representative Judge Bratr, and Senator Col. fitrin, did not press it upon the Legislature, thus allowing time for the people to reilect upon the sobject another year. At the ensuing election, (If 53) the Division- ists prevailed upon both pitrtiet to agree to j have a rote taken 'For Division and "Against Division." A section of one party, however, to stifle a fair expression, also' resolved to have another vote on another local issue re-i-pecung a Railroad, concerning which there was then much feeling in some sections uf the eountv. rn.n .:.n,T. nr Ts;:.. -.. t..t..t ..;. By this fraud selling A-iti-Bond for Anli Diviiion rotes they obtaincJ a bare majority of 161 against Pirision. The friends of Division however, ronsidered this no teM.and circulated petitions fur Pivisirn when Tkirtyme Hundred out of Fifty-ont Hundred citizens expressed their wish for Di- vision, and not over Twentv-One Hundred names were elauntd to have siguel the remon- stranres. A bill for Division was introduced iffl tVnate bv Mr. 5LirBK. anr! natafd. Dtiani- noosly. Maj. Sinon-ros. our Representative, I however, held the small Division and Bond vote as a vote of instruction, to him, and, aid ed by the promise of New Berliners that the defeat of division would enure to the s:rengtb rning of the Democratic party in O'd Union, they narrowly succeeded by legislative leper tlemain, in postponing the decisive teat in the )!..ose, and thus threw the exciting question upon the Legislature the third time. Last fill, an attempt was made to get a more honest and fair test vote upon the subject. Accordingly, lue Whig friends of Division no minated Dr. Ere.rK f.tr Representative, and Mr. for Commissioner (the twooffic s bearing more directly npon the q-testion of Division.) The AVhsg opponen's of Dirision nominated Mr. Stmittw for Representative, and Mr. Iloam for Commissioner. The test, moreover, was to be "honntly ex- prnard," or it wonld not be binding. We will stale two important particulars, in which the most JLigrant diihonaly was practiced by the ; opponents of Division : j I. In vain were the New Berliners asked to draw ap more perfect or stringent bonds ih-y would neither do that, nor cease to depre ciate and maiif-n the solemn ovenant of hono orable men as can be found in any county. When one rest fails of satisfying:, or pasrs awar, another test may be applied, aiid the Representative is equally bound to regard it. The vote between r! pec It and Simonton would have been a test, but not the test, or the only lest. And now, we ask, how can the popular will be so "honestlu exprewetT as by PETITIONS and REMONSTRANCES ! At evrv election.
