Signed by the Officers. For the Lf-fl.nri: Chroniela. I was pleased with part of an extract from a letter which you published in your last paper relative to our Congressman, but I confess that I was somewhat surprised to find even iu that ititeuded laudation, that be was then on the "21st of July, about starting for his home, though Con gress would not adjourn fir sonic seven teen days afterwards. The presumption in mj mind however was that the labours referred to in that letter had pressed too heavily upon a constitution already pressed down with age, and that nature ex hausted had driven the old man to scek quict and rest in the bosom of his family. I could not think that a man who had been so valiant in the fi'lit as to suffer Lunger and peril by night and by day would for a trifling cause have left the field just at a time when the labours of an eight months' session was coming to a focus for, it must be remembered, that all the imjwrfant till are usua'ly acted upon during the last week of Congress. Hut never was money voted away more lavishly than during the last week of the session just closed. Millions upon milli ons squandered upon favorites salaries were raised without stint almost every thing that should not have been done, in done, unfortunately the scat of our Mem ber was vacant, when some Thirty or V rimy minion miliars were e-7 , Hi. honest voice was noj 'ten of the treasury ,ho 0(LjCr fi" sVhe River and Harbor, the .Jiitnestead bill, and a bill to prevent the Officers of the Navy from swilling them selves with ten dollars brandy at the ex pense of the people, failed, (the latter by a tic vote ;) our Member not there to vote. It was known that the Administration was pressing an appropriation of Ten Million Dollars to be placed in the hands of the President with which to raise a row with Fpain or any other of the weaker powers, be conquering of which would extend be area of slavery : good and true men laod at their post, the iniquity was pre aUl, and the country saved from a dis graceful war One of our own ships of war ba'tend l-'wn and burned a defenceless eitv, theli-pn sentatives of other districts at once' demanded why it was done, and so the administration was cheeked .in its CM overt set of fillibostrring. Seeing that matters of so much importance were crowded into th last few days of the scs Mon, tic people of this district hive a right to know why their Member was not thci especially as it is feared by some of his frituds that he li ft his seat, (thou eh bringing with him his eight dollars per day,) not to recruit his health, nor to en joy the rwcets of domestic circle; but to engage in a petty political fight to be the Li-iiorcd delegate from Heaver township to a convention of dUorgacizi-rs.
