' "The politicai center of gravity in the nation has sliifted * * * to the states that lie between the Mississippi River and the Pacific Coast." —New York Times editorial. This opinion is typical of an idea which is rapidly spreading tliroughout the country. There is a feeling that "the West is in the saddle for the pres idential nomination in 1920." The fact that the West decided the last presidential election has made it a potent factor in future calculations. Moreover, the politicians know that in case the woman suffrage constitutional amendment does not become operative in time for the next national election diere are, nevertheless, 10 states west •of the Mississippi which have al ready given tlieir women the franchise, add ing an increment of some six million votes, which might easily turn the elec tion one way or the otlier. Hence, the Republicgn leaders of the East as well is of the West are seriously consider ing wliether it would not be good poli tics to take a western candidate. It is significant that three of the most generally talked about presiden tial possibilities for 1920 come frorn the Far West. They are United States Senators Poindexter, Borali and John son. The first mentioned, about whom considerable discussion is now center ing, is from the state of Washington. Though a native of Tennessee and graduate of a Virginia university, Poindexter chose the Pacific North as his field for life work, openlng practice in Walla Walla, Wash., <d IMI T.fllbP ho urne "hiHcto fha on. perior court, and attracted mudi fa vorable attention by his Judicial abili ty. In 1908 Poindexter was elected as a representative from the state of Washington to the Sixty-first Congress. He soon becarae known as an able, pro gressive Republican. In the senate, to which he was elevated in 1910, he was a staunch advocate of measures favor ing the control and restrictlon of big corporations, especially of the rail roads. He souglit the conservation of ali naturai resources of tlie country, including water power, -coal and oil lands. Before the war he stood strong ly for preparedness, and Inter he vig orously supported ali measures of the administration for the protectiou of American rights. He advocated throw ing the whole power of the nation into the successful prosecution of the war. Mr. Poindexter believes that Bolshe vism and ali other movements destruc tive of representative government and national spirit sliould be strongly tak en in band and that leaders in at tempts to overthrow our institutions should be severely punislied. He is opposed to any scheme for creating a liybrid government of the world where by Europe and Asia, in his opinion, would inevitably dominate this country and control its policies. Hiram Johnson, a native of Califor nia, was governor of the state before lie was cliosen senator. He is extreme ly popular in that commonwealth and wlll be strongly backed in his tight for the Presidential nomination. Johnson was successful, after a long struggle, in ridding California of the domination of the Southern Pacific. I/ON. CABRINI IN GRAVE STA TO ROMA, 10—Il socialista riformi sta Angelo Cabrini, deputato al Par lamento, trovasi a letto a parecchi giorni, gravemente ammalato. La mostrazione le fece una calorosa di mostrazione di simpatia. La città era tutta imbandierata. UN PRESTITO DELL'ARGENTINA ALL'ITALIA L'on. Belotti e il conte Sforza, ri spettivamente sottosegretari di Stato al Tesoro ed agli Esteri, stanno esa minando da qualche giorno le moda lità e le condizioni di un prestito che and without the sanction and support ! of this great power candidates fori state or judicial offlces could not be elected. Johnson, first as counsel for interests opposing the railroad corpo- i ration and later as governor, waged a bitter and unremitting warfare agalnst railroad domination. His final victory was a potent factor In his election to the senate in 1916. Johnson is a Re publican, but generally regarded as one of the radicai type. He has, like Poindexter, strongly opposed the League of Nations. Senator William E. Borah of Idaho does not differ greatly in the degree of his achievements from the two other westerners. Born in Wayne county, 111., Borah was educated in the com mon schools of that state and at Kan sas State University. He was admit ted to the bar in IS9O and devoted his time to legai practice until his election to the senate in 1907. Borah is one of the most active figures in the United States senate. His eftorts largely have been directed toward the proper de velopmeat of the great naturai re sources of the country, especially of the West. He is known as a progres sive Bepublican, fearless in fighting for whftt he believes to be right and, like the others included in this presi dential group, has opposed from the start the League of covenant. From the Atlantic to the Pacific Coast is a long jump for national poli tics to take. However, ali precedente, both in business and politics, seem to be vanishing in these days of reinark able readjustments, and the old theory that a Presidential candidate must necessarily come from east of the Mis- 1 A.
