Inexperienced players look to step up By Brendan Monahan COLLEGIAN STAFF WRITER Nate Stupar wanted to clarify what he meant by experience. When he said the linebacking unit didn't have experience during his Wednesday conference call, he didn't mean it lacked in years played for Penn State. Instead, he was referring to Chris Colasanti, Banff Gbadyu and himself never playing a full collegiate game. Their lack of game exposure is a result of linebackers Navorro Bowman, Sean Lee and Josh Hull occupying the linebacking spots the past year. Now the linebackers and Penn State football attempt to make up for the loss of those three linebackers, defensive lineman Jared Odrick and quarter back Daryll Clark. Penn State has talent it had top-16 recruiting classes the last two years but it lacks the game and primetime exposure, some thing that may be essential if the Nittany Lions expect to compete for the Big Ten championship or defeat defending national champi on Alabama next season. The quarterback position is the most glaring vacancy, and the coaching staff likely won't decide on a starter until August. Stupar said redshirt sophomore Matt McGloin has been making good throws this spring, but sopho more Kevin Newsome presents a dual threat, something McGloin doesn't demonstrate. Wide receiver Graham Zug said the quarterback battle has been very corn petitive this spring "I've seen a lot of improvement from both of them," Zug said. On the defensive side of the ball, the biggest void may be the hole left by Odrick on the defensive line, who earned the conference's defensive player of the year honor. This season, junior Devon Still has stepped up as the leading replace ment. Still, a Wilmington, Del.. native, said he doesn't feel replac ing Odrick is a burden. Instead, it's just a challenge. - I've put in the hard work it takes in order to have a breakout year," Still said. Still tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee and broke his left ankle in back-to-back years as a freshman and sopho more. He played in 13 games last year and recorded 19 tackles, but he has yet to take the number of snaps expected from a starter. Though Penn State replaces three linebackers, Still said he and the defense aren't pressured by the losses. He to know their assignments. As of now, Stupar, Colasanti and Gbadyu will comprise the first team unit, but Michael Mauti should be ready for preseason workouts. Stupar said Colasanti has stepped up this spring by con sistently making tackles, and Michael Yancich is another line backer who caught Stupar's eye. Colasanti said the team worked on the chance to come together as a linebacking unit this spring even if leadership is at a premium. Lee was a teacher for Colasanti while he was buried on the depth chart the last three years, showing him how to focus on the field. But as of now, he said there are few vocal leaders on the Lions' defense. "If you always look at Penn State, it's a great team and a great tradition," Colasanti said. "We have expectations on our shoul ders, but right now, it's about grow ing together as a team, building upon a new foundation." Colasanti, leaving the team's sights undefined, didn't say how high the expectations were, but instead talked of the term on a more personal level. "We all have expectations of our selves," Colasanti said. "We have goals for ourselves, and I know that to Brendan Monahan Score: Blue 24, White 17 What's Good: Receivers help QBs' confidence.
