The Daily Collegian Daughtiy to come to PSU By Lindsay Cryer COLLEGIAN STAFF WRITER With the announcement that Daughtry will visit the Bryce Jordan Center, fans can now hope the band will find State College to be a "home, a place where they belong." Daughtry the quintet featuring Season 5 "American Idol" contestant Chris Daughtry 7 will make a stop with opening band Cavo at the BJC on Wednesday, March 31. The upcoming concert will be Daughtry's first at the BJC. "We have been around here for 14 years and we have seen many repeat artists.” said Bernie Punt, director of sales and marketing for the BJC. "There's always a bit of excitement when it's a first time artist." Tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. on Friday at the Eisenhower Box Office, Penn State Dowmtown Theatre Center. Bryce Jordan Center and online. Tickets will be priced at $39.75. A student pre-sale will begin Tuesday at noon at the HUB-Robeson Center as well as at the regular ticket offices. Monica Simon (sophomore-public relations) said she's glad tickets are being Students crowd surf to Motion City By Lindsay Cryer COLLEGIAN STAFF WRITER As Motion City Soundtrack lead singer Justin Pierre looked out at the crowd Saturday night, he blocked the light from his eyes to get a better look at his fans. "What's it like being so awesome?" Pierre asked a screaming audience. "Is it pretty cool?” The fans made it clear the feeling was mutual. The sold-out Motion City 7 Soundtrack and Set Your Goals concert, presented by the Student Programming Association (SPA), was held Saturday night in a half-full HIIB-Alumni Hall. Motion City 7 Soundtrack began its portioa of the concert with the song "Worker Bee" from its new album "Mv Dinosaur Life." released Jan. 19. Fan excitement ramped up when the band began to play one of its most popular songs. "The Future Freaks Me Out." It appeared as if the entire audi ence knew 7 every lyric. Pierre even took center stage to faux-direct the audience as they sang along with the song, waving his arms as if he were conducting an orchestra. "There was great energy from the crow r d and from the band." Zach Manuel (senior-advertising) said. More than 20 attendees crow'd surfed as the band played their songs. Matt Wilson said the concert w 7 as better than he expected. "We weren't sure if people would mosh or move around,’ - Wilson said after the show. "But they did all of it." Rachael McKelvey (junior-finance). SPA market ing chairwoman, said the moshing and crowd surf ing was not too big of a problem, as the group had enough workers to maintain crow 7 d security 7 . Motion City Soundtrack drummer Tony Thaxton said the band was pleasantly surprised by the con cert. "This was actually really fun I definitely enjoyed myself, "Thaxton said after the show. After the band stopped playing and left the stage. I definitely go to a lot of shows that I normally wouldn't," Simon said. "I've never heard of Daughtry 7 coming near to me it's a ; really good opportunity." j After his time on American Idol Daughtry, along with his band, released a self-titled album in i November 2006, which included the singles "Home" j and "It's Not Over." "I'm definitely excited to look into going. I'm a big 'American Idol' fan. I liked him a lot," Simon said. "I really like his music. I feel like I can really relate to a lot of his songs." Punt said the BJC expects a crowd large enough to warrant reconfiguring the venue from its "the atre" set-up to a larger "end-stage" design to accommodate more people. "I think we re gonna have quite a wide spectrum of fans," Punt said. "Not just all hard rock, but pop. Young and old. There's a lot of people who like him." Ray Pascoe (junior-chemical engineering) said bringing Daughtry is a good choice. A fan who has never seen the band live before, Pascoe said he is anxious to see what it will bring to the stage. "They have a pretty large fan base and will satis fv a lot of students here." he said. Kelley King. The band returned to cheering fans to play not only one, but two more songs ending the show with crowd favorite "Everything Is Alright." Pierre came out to greet fans after the show 7 , but in an effort to conserve his voice only commu nicated to his fans by making signs with his hands. The most popular signal? A thumbs-up. Peanut the purple woozle, Bubba J the redneck and curmudgeon Walter all made an off-color appearance in State College this weekend. The comedic puppets stopped at the Bryce Jordan Center on Friday night with ventriloquist Jeff Dunham's comedv tour Opening the show was Dunham's sidekick Brian Haner. otherwise known as "Guitar Guy." He combined comedy with music, telling the audience his life story, including anecdotes about his childhood, marriages and his own children. Dunham came out a short while later, saying that the cold temperatures in State College were a shock for the Los Angeles comedian and his crew. It had been 72 degrees in California when thev left, he said. First up was Dunham's puppet Walter, followed by Achmed the Dead Terrorist, who threatened the audience with his trademark line: "I kill you." During this portion ot the show. Guitar Guy came out on stage to accompany Achmed with a song. Their singing was repeat edly delayed, however. as Dunham began improvising and events took a wild turn. But his flying-by-the-seat-of his-pants style paid off in audi ence accolades. "I liked the parts where he was improvising rather than the scripted parts,” Ali Martinson (freshman-biology) said. “I thought some of the funniest parts were when he was having fun with his friend Guitar Guy.” After Achmed and Guitar Guy crooned lyrics that included “I got the blew-myself-up blues,” Dunham brought out Peanut and Jose Jalapeno to finish up his act. For an encore, Dunham per formed his routine with Bubba J, an act in which most of the audi ence knew the lines. "It's kinda sad when the audi ence knows your act better than you do." Bubba J said. “It’s like I got 10.000 voices in my head.” The show concluded with the audience giving Dunham a stand ing ovation, to which he respond ed. "You guys are awesome.” Even some longtime Dunham fans said they were surprised by the show.
