The Daily Collegian Freshmen shine By Margaret McAvoy and Mike Still COLLEGIAN STAFF WRITER The Penn State women’s swim ming and diving team finished in fourth place over the weekend as it competed in the annual Ohio State rKI , e Invitational. WOMEN S Penn State fell SWIMMING behind the 12th- - - ranked University of Minnesota, who took first place with 1,125 points. Ohio State fol lowed the Gophers with 784 points, and West Virginia finished in third place, 71.5 points ahead of the Lions. The team was led by strong per formances by its freshman class. Amy Modglin and Paige Whitmire both posted impressive numbers over the weekend at the Ohio State Invitational. On Saturday, Modglin swam a career best in the 400-yard individ ual medley with a time of 4:17.94, Topping her previous mark of 4:18.23, the time also puts marks her down for eighth in program history, replacing the mark she set on Nov. 21 against Virginia. She fin ished with a time of 1:57.12, taking home 20 points for the Lions’ total score. Modglin finished a full two sec onds ahead of Ohio State’s Samantha Cheverton who fin ished in second place. The Lions also received strong performances from their two relay groups in the 400-yard freestyle relay, taking third and sixth. The team is off from competi tion for now, not racing again until Jan. 3 when it travels to Athens, Ga., for a two-day meet against the Bulldogs.
