In the next months, renovations, merg ers and performances will continue to change the environment at the University. Campus Construction Three major projects are slated for either construction work or planning this semester. Library construction will continue throughout Fall Semester, said Vicki Fong, manager of Science, Engineering and Research Communications. Temporarily shifted walkways and entrances in and around the building, addi tional book drop-off points and other fea tures ate located around the library to make the facility more convenient during construction, she said. HUB/Paul Robeson Cultural Center con struction will also continue throughout the semester, Fong said. Crews are working to relocate and improve utilities around the building. Construction of the building will begin later this semester, she said, and the com pleted HUB/Robeson Center will cover about 15 percent of the existing lawn area. Construction of the structure, which will connect to the Uni versity House, will begin in 1998, he said. Speakers and Performances Orchestras, dancers, speakers and other entertainers are scheduled to appear at auditoriums and theaters around the Uni versity. Earvin "Magic" Johnson will kick off the Distinguished Speaker Series at 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22 in Eisenhower Auditori um. William Shulz, executive director of Amnesty International USA, and Jeane Kirkpatrick, former U.S. representative to the United Nations will also speak later in the academic year, according to a Univer sity press release. In addition to the speaker series, the Center for the Performing Arts has a semester-long calendar of events, which includes groups ranging from dance com panies to orchestras. One performance, State Fair, a Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein musical, will open Sept. 4 at Eisenhower Auditori um, according to .a Center for the Perform ing Arts schedule. The story, which centers on an lowa farm family, will also run Sept. 5 and 7 New Programs Two new programs at the University focus on improving students' , learning experience outside the traditional class room. The Residence Hall Newspaper Reader ship Program is in its early stages. Four daily newspapers are delivered to dorms across campus, according to a University news release. Interest in the publications will be moni tored throughout the semester and adjust ments will be made in response to student interest. Also, the University's World Campus, a distance education program that uses the Internet and other information technology, will continue to expand in order to reach more students, according to a University news release. Courses, programs and ser vices will eventually be made available to students around the world through the pro gram. University Mergers The University's two major mergers, one with the Dickinson School of Law and the other with the Geisinger Health Sys tem, will progress throughout the Fall Semester.
