That said, the Atlanta Falcons are the softest 4-1 team in National Football League history. Excluding an early season deba cle with the potent 49ers, oppo nents have a combined record of 2- 19. While Carolina, New Orleans, New England, and the Jets won’t be confused with solid, fundamentally sound football teams, Atlanta is winning. Coaches from Seifert to Switzer, Shula to Schottenheimer all preach the value of beating up on the weaklings, the incompetent, the ones with absolutely no chance to win a football game. The Falcons have done the job and the stage is set for tonight’s key match-up against their heated division rivals. St. Louis sits atop the NFC West at 4-1. Tied with Atlanta and San Francisco, the Rams have been a huge surprise in 1995. With the solid play of a molar-rocking, turnover-causing, touchdown-scor ing defense, a game that would have been an afterthought months ago, is now a crucial conference clash. And because of that vicious defense, the Rams will emerge vic torious. With the ability to put pressure on the passer, St. Louis can cause an offense fits. Three of its five adversaries have been held to under 15 points, and no team has moved the ball easily against the blue and yellow. If not for a stupendous perfor mance by Marshall Faulk two weeks ago, the Rams would be enjoying the spoils of a perfect record. Tonight, they’ll shut down the Falcon attack by containing the combination of Eric Metcalf and Jeff George. LOUIS 27, Atlanta 12 San Francisco (4-1) at Indianapo lis (3-2) The Colts have finally shown signs of life. After a sluggish 1-2' start, including a home loss to Cincinnati, the Colts have won suc cessive games against St. Louis and Miami. Overcoming a huge second-half deficit last week, Indianapolis ral lied behind quarterback Jim Har baugh to emerge with an overtime victory. The 27-24 triumph was one of Indy’s best in recent memory, and the former Michigan field gen eral is desperately trying to prove his effectiveness as a professional signal caller. The Niners return from an off week rested and ready, preparing to assume their assault on the NFL. How the stellar San Francisco defensive line handles the chal lenge of Marshall Faulk will deter mine the outcome. They’ll perform admirably, as the 49ers almost always do, and emerge with a win. Unfortunately for all you Indy fans, that future juggernaut will not be seen this week. SAN FRANCISCO 31, Indianapo lis 16 N.Y. Jets (1-5) at Carolina (0-5) After the expansion Jacksonville Jaguars humiliated the boys from the ‘Burgh last week for their sec ond victory, fellow first-year brethren Carolina Panthers will be looking to move into the win col umn as well. Against the hapless Jets, it could be difficult to decipher exactly which group is the expansion team. With Boomer Esiason still groggy from a Bruce Smith blast almost a week later, Bubby Brister should get his first start in New York. While Brister won’t conjure up memories of Broadway Joe, he’s occasionally decent. As fate will have it, that won’t happen here. Impressive rookie Kerry Collins will lead the home team to victory No. 1 as the Pan thers relegate the Jets to the worst team in football. CAROLINA 21, N.Y. Jets 13 In other games...
