Attorney Gerry Spence is represent ing nearly 2,000 former steelworkers at the Geneva Works in Orem in a lawsuit that alleges the steel producer deliber ately tried to keep the employees from receiving their pensions. The trial, which began yesterday before U.S. District Judge Bruce Jen kins, is expected to last several weeks. USX officials have declined to com- ment on the case in the past. The com pany was to begin presenting its side of the issue later yesterday. Spence said Pittsburgh-based USX wanted to sell the World War 11-era steel mill as early as 1985, but promised workers it would keep it open until late in 1989 so they could find other jobs or Dean's List Jack Swisher Michael Hughan David Verzino Delta Theta Sigma Leon Halsey Delta Upsilon Jeffrey Harlow Jonathan Litofsky Mark Neuman Andrew Susi Robert Zahradnik Kappa Delta Rho Daniel Bonaroti Thomas Davidson Christopher Epperson Brian Macafee Todd Weinstock Kappa Sigma David Falchek Lambda CM Alpha Joseph Angelelli Corin Beck James Warren Gregory Werkheiser Phi Sigma Delta Sigma David Bronstein Ira Caplan Jeffrey Cassuto Josh Goldstein Jason Hertzberg Chad Karp Eric Nagel Jordan Robinson Brian Rubin Paul Sobin Steven Wernikoff Phi Sigma Kappa David Barton Raymond Brideau Frederick Buechel Daniel Fasold Brian Heym Niel Kalvel Peter Kiely Brian Pierce Matthew Vergamini John Woerner Pi Kappa Alpha Jeffrey Cole David Cross Michael Delone Pi Kappa Phi Thomas Keady Jay McAndrew Charles Peters Andrew Phillips Micheal Scheel Pi Lambda Phi Steven Goldin Jason Kocudak Brian Riley Phi Delta Theta Elmer Keach Brian Pavlakovic Brady Semmel Eric Sprys Chris Wick Phi Gamma Delta Kevin Cull David Pescherine Michael Pescherine Phi Kappa Psi Michael Gruin Steven Schankowitz Paul Sessions Samuel Sheckman Joseph Stallone Matthew Swartley Phi Kappa Sigma Scott Davis Mark Jones Jerry Lucas Michael Sanford Eric Seiken Patrick Bell Mark Flaugh Psi Upsilon Darren Kellerman Sigma Alpha Epsilon Lawrence Barrett Mark Mortensen Joseph Naggar Sigma Alpha Mu Mitchell Adelman Evan Bundis Michael Danovitz Jason Ficks Robert Milmore Mitchell Nadel David Sax Sigma Chi Kenneth Demaree Marc Lambright Ross Lyon Brendon Raymond Chad Rutter Phi Kappa Tau Wayne Crowther Douglas Elliott Michael Leber Philip Mazza John Messner Salvatore Mutone Jeffrey Rose Phi Kappa Theta Robert Nagy Charles Weiss Richard Mansfield Phi Mu Delta Alexander Price The Daily Collegian Tuesday, March 19,1991- qualify for retirement. Instead, the company secretly tried to sell the plant sooner and shed itself of a pension burden that was a "night mare," Spence said. He said USX's total pension fund had become so large it was worth more than all the company's other assets, and executives wanted the money for other ventures. "The pension fund became a huge treasure for anyone with the know-how to grab and utilize except the steel workers," Spence said. He said then-USX president David M. Roderick even wrote to the workers in December 1985 to assure them the plant would remain open until 1989, when a Korean steel mill would take Geneva's place as supplier for West Coast manufacturers. Early in 1986, USX officials were exploring the possibility of selling the plant to Basic Manufacturing & Tech nology, a Utah-based business consor tium, said Spence. BM&T was to be made a USX subsidiary, he said.
