Values Good Thru September 2.2 Good Thru September 23 at The N ittany Mall li i , :i _ 1 .., Holmes to fight again this year By ED SCHUYLER Jr AP Sports Writer NEW YORK Larry Holmes, who claims the status of being the world's premier heavyweight, said yesterday he will appeal a court decision that apparently blocks a fight with Gerrie Coet zee, the World Boxing Associa tion champion, ih November. Holmes also said that if he doesn't fight Coetzee this year, he will fight someone. In fact, he said, he will fight until he breaks the late Rocky Marciano's re cord. Marciano is the first heavy weight champion to have retired unbeaten. He was 49-0. Holmes is 45-0. "Yeah, I'll fight this year," Holmes said by telephone froin his office in Easton, Pa. "It all depends on Don King." King was set to promote a fight between the unbeaten Holmes and Coetzee, of South Africa, in November at Los Angeles, but Monday Judge Daniel Huyett 111 gianted a 90-day right of first refusal to Richard Hirschfeld, a Virginia lawyer. • Holmes contended he didn't understand the full implications of an agreement he signed last Oct. 20 with Hirschfeld . But Huyett ruled Holmes can not enter into - a contract with anyone or any group other than Hirschfeld "to pro Mote a boxing match between Holmes and Coet zee at any time unless Larry Holmes offers the defendant the right to promote the match on terms equal to those offered to Larry Holmes by such other per son or entity." %i (7. 4.; 'id 10.90 Value Plus! Tickets are $11.50 apiece, and go on sale Sept. 13 at 4 p.m. at the Eisenhower Auditorium box office. In the past year, the British rock quartet the Fixx has achieved a popular success that might not have seemed possible at the time of their formation in London six years ago, on the crest of rock's New Wave. Then known as the Portraits, rumor has it that they were perceived by their peers as only one of scintillions of aspiring bands. This was until the addition of guitarist Jamie West-Oram in 1980. With his input, they began to strive for a more polished, cleaner sound. Their first single with their new guitarist and current band name, "Lost Planes," earned them an American recording contract in 1981. Commercial success didn't follow automatically. Their first album, The Shuttered Room, spawned a moderately successful hit in "Stand or Fall," which was promoted in part through early MTV video exposure. 1983 turned out to be their first great year, as their second album Reach the Beach went platinum. This was also partly due to the creation of striking music videos that received heavy rotation particularly for the songs "Saved by Zero" and'"Orie Thing Leads to Another." Fixx drummer Adam Woods describes the sound that finally clicked as one that is"concise without any limits." It is built on simple instrumental lines that cut through the densest of mixes, enhanced by lead singer Cy Cumin's mellifluous baritone voice. Adding significantly to the.overall sound are Cumin's acute song lyrics, which take the form of acerbic social criticism. "Stand or Fall" is an attack on mass media Flashpoint: By SHAWN ISRAEL Collegian Arts Writer To put it mildly, "Flashpoint" is not a recommendable movie if the viewer is inter ested in experiencing high drama, biting social relevance or top-notch classical story telling by any stretch of even most liberal imaginations. But damn, it's fun. I chant this film's praise with more than an iota of guilt, considering that "Flashpoint" is, in terms of pure filmmaking mechanics, one of the sloppiest enterprises to flicker on the big screens so far this year. It is photo graphed against the dramatic impact of the story and edited to discontinuity ad nauseum. What about the acting? Ha! Some of the performances bring new meaning to the word "criminal." Dare I even mention the laugha ble plot? Well, all right. * * AIChE MEETING * * Featuring... PROCTER & GAMBLE Product Development Manufacturing Management September 13th 8 p.m. Triangle Fraternity 226 Beaver Ave. Refreshments provided! Film has little redeeming social value, has plenty of flaws, but is just plain fun "Flashpoint" tells the story of two Texas Border Patrol guards, Logan (Kris Kristof ferson) and Wyatt (Treat Williams), both of whom are more than a little peeved with their precinct's decision to install "geosensors," sort of portable LandSats (weather satellites commonly used by weather bureaus) in their sector to increase "efficiency." This is only the beginning of trouble for our two heroes. While Wyatt is escorting two fetching tele phone operators (Jean Smart and Tess Harp er) back to their hotel after he and Logan have trysted with these two lovelies, Logan stumbles upon an odd-looking protrusion jut ting out of an aroyo just on the outskirts of the department's area of jurisdiction. After a bit of laborious digging, he uncovers a jeep containing a long-dead corpse and a satchel containing $BO,OOO in marked bills. From this discovery Logan schemes to split the money Juniors! "Saved By Zero" is a celebration of the triumph of the creative, spirit over the restrictions of commercialism. A brand new album, Phantoms is thema tically preoccupied with the struggle to reconcile one's public and private self to break down the barriers to personal expression. One song, "Less Cities," concerns itself with the destruction of Beirut. To some people, this may seem like overly ponderous subject matter for a rock band, but Cumin feels different ly. "I think sometimes when people put records out they presume too little of an audience. They think 'I love you' will suffice, when hidden behind a beat. But I tend to think that most people cover a lot of ground when listening to things, as I do myself. More than just the obvious emotions." Over the past few years the Fixx have earned great praise for their live performances, particularly in their 1983 American appearances as the opening act for A Flock of Seagulls and the Police. Their University Park appearance is a part of their first international headlining tour, initiated to promote Phantoms. It's clear that the band members (Cumin, West-Oram, Woods, and key boardist Rupert Greenall) see live performing as an important part of getting their musical message across. Says Cumin, "It's unbelievable when you sing a personal opinion in a song, and you see a thousand people singing it back to you." Opening for the Fixx on the Sept. 23 will be solo artist Andy Fraser, a man with some impressive credentials in rock music, particularly as guitarist for John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. As bassist with the seminal 1970's blues band Free, Fraser participated in recording "All Right Now" and "Fire and Water". Fraser is also hitting the road to promote an imminent album, Branded, which is his first American solo release. The r Mail this coupon to: RPSU Institute for Paralegal Training 1926 Arch Street Philadelphia, PA 19103 Please send a copy of your catalogue with Wyatt and head off to Mexico before they probably lose their jobs to the geosen sors. This is just the first 20 minutes of the film. Add to all this an absurd series of twists, including implications of political assassina tion, corrupt government officials working in tandem with dope smugglers and a rich Mexican attorney who smuggles his people across the border into Texas and then kills them, among other things. "Flashpoint" as simply a story throws out so many implau sible premises with such rapid-fire abandon that it is completely laughable. Technically, the movie is not much better. The editing looks as though it was done with a Lawn Boy and the discontinuity of motion is wretched in its obviousness. Too many events, 'such as Wyatt surviving a plane' crash, require near-total refutation on the li=lll viewer's part of what has passed before visually. Perhaps "Flashpoint's" largest failure is as a genrepiece. From about the third shot, the viewer can disce'rn that not only does a conspiracy exist, but who the good guys and bad guys are virtually on sight. (The bad guys usually wear sunglasses all the time.) This is one of those films in which victims insignificant to progressing the story die from flesh wounds, and the real heavies grovel in the dirt and die slow, painful deaths.• Despite the fact that one can almost trash "Flashpoint" as simply a bad conspiracy movie from scene one, however, is half the almost obscenely good fun one has in watch ing this movie. Director William Tannen and screenwriters 'Michael Butler and Dennis Shriack seem, somehow, to be in on the joke that this is all garbage, and visually and The Daily Collegian Wednesday, Sept. 12, 1984-15 The Fixx verbally infuse into the film a massive dose of doomed energy, the chief propellant of most good B-movies. Every scene seems to take on such an exaggerated sense of life-or-death importance that it becomes self-mocking. What makes "Flashpoint" chiefly appeal ing, though, are the characters of Logan and Wyatt themselves. However implausible their situation, these two guys are interesting beyond logic. It is as though they are the perfect characters to have in such a silly narrative. One even begins to appreciate Williams' sometimes atrocious overacting as played against Kristofferson's bargain-base ment "method" approach. You just like these guys. "Flashpoint" also serves as a veritable showcase for eccentric acting of the lowest order.
