16—The Daily Collegian Thursday, Sept. 22, 1983 Chinese newspaper blames capitalism for adultery By VICTORIA GRAHAM Associated Press Writer PEKING Adultery has become a social ill of China, where sexual morality is strict and violation of marriage vows is considered a result of decadent capitalism. In a page-one story the Peking Evening News reported on a symposium Tuesday on the evils of adultery. Several dozen lawyers, legal workers, court officials, women's activists and others listened to an outpouring of sad stories of families suffering from "another woman" or "another man." Some participants said wicked "third parties" should be punished as criminals. Adultery in China is euphemis tically known as "third party involvement." Some spouses and third parties, the paper said, "did not seek true love and happy marriages and family life." These illicit liaisons lead to crime, fights, wife beating, abandonment, even a few murders, said the newspaper. Adultery causes family rupture, divorce, remarriages and "critically jeopardizes social tranquility," the news paper lectured. Many Chinese endure loveless marriages, arranged years before or forced upon them during the hardline days of the Cultural Revolution, because it would be disgraceful to divorce. It is not uncommon for an unhappily married person to take a lover, according to Chinese sources. China traditionally has frowned on divorce, considered it a last resort and praised the chaste widow who went to her grave without remarrying. Husbands could take a concubine if they could afford to, but that is no longer allowed. The idea of male superiority persists, although it is officially criticized. Even working wives have to do most of the housework and childcare, and in a traditional carryover may have their mothers-in-law keeping watch on whether they are good wives and mothers. The newspaper gave no statistics on divorce in the city of 9.2 million and none was immediately available. In 1932, however, 370,000 spouses nationwide, most women, applied for divorce and 277,000 were granted. The rest of the couples reportedly reconciled. Adultery was given as the cause of one-third of divorces in Peost of those breakups resulted from adultery, male, chauvinism and hasty or immature marriages. The symposium called on the city's Communist Party and government to step up propaganda about socialist morality and educate young people about the impor tance of fidelity. • Reports of adultery surface frequently in the govern ment-controlled. press and most involve crimes, some times grisly efforts to murder the spouse. The family-affairs and lonelyhearts columnist of the Evening News, Gong Yijuan, has received thousands of letters about tortured love triangles and she mercilessly chastises intruding third parties and straying spouses-: A looser sexual morality is alarming Chinese authori ties who worry about wayward youth. ************ * * * * * * * * * * * 75° 2 Beef Burritos 15reg. $2.50 * _AA good for one order with coupon only thru 9128183 Of: • * goy Sun Thur. * 75y Fri. & Sat. ************ * * * * * * * * * * * 75° 131 S.
