4—The Daily Collegian Thursday, Sept. 22, 1983 Despite loss, Lady Lions improving By JEFF SAUKAITIS Collegian Sports Writer When the women's volleyball team begin its week-long road trip in Utah Tuesday night, it faced the unenviable task of playing 11th ranked Brigham Young University. IME;a Lady Lion Sharon Mclntyre digs deep for the ball during action earlier this year. The Lady Lions, who lost to Brigham Young on Tuesday, have a tough slate ahead of them for the remainder of the season. Peters; By RICK STOUCH Collegian Sports Writer Senior volleyball starter Leslie Peters has been overlooked by a lot of people so far in her college career Because of her height in a sport of much taller players, the 5-4 setter received little attention from most colleges• she was interested in attend ing. And so far, despite playing an important role in the success of one of the best women's volleyball programs in the East, the Parkesburg native has missed out on national recognition. But since height, and not ability, is what Peters is short on, she has not missed out on praise from her Penn State coaches and teammates. Women's Head Volleyball Coach Russ Rose said he thinks Peters is one of the top setters in the country and that her small stature might make what she's done even more noteworthy. For last p!ck•up, 466-7713 State College team was tired after its long travel to Utah, and that made him even more pleased with the Lady Lions' effort against Brigham Young. "I was a lot happier with the effort I saw in this match as op posed to the Louisville match," Rose said. "I think we're making strides." Rose said the team served and passed very well. The serving was about as well on Tuesday night as it has been this season, with Lori Barberich's seven service aces key ing the attack. However, Rose is concerned about the remaining matches on this Utah swing. The Lady Lions were scheduled to face Utah Uni versity last night. Tonight, the team will begin the three-day BYU Clas sic which is certain to give the Lady Lions their toughest test thus far in the young season. Rose said in order to be compet itive in the upcoming tournament, Penn State will need to improve at the outside hitter position which has been a trouble spot since senior Patty Skadeland broke her leg in the Penn State Invitational tourna ment two weeks ago. "We need someone to emerge at the outside hitter position and play consistent volleyball for us," Rose said. "(Tuesday), some people did what they are capable of doing. We just don't stack up against teams like BYU. Unfortunately, that is the truth of the matter. But we fight really hard and we never give up. "I thought we played good de fense, but we have a lot of difficulty when it comes to playing a good team. We need someone who can put the ball on the floor." is to make the people she plays with perform better, which has led to positive results not only for the squad but for Peters' teammates as well. "In the three years that Leslie's been here, I've had three All-Americans named and that's a tribute to her play,"! Rose said. "They could give valuable insight into how important she is. There's no way they could have been named All- Americans without her." Those All-Americans were quick to agree that Peters played a big role in their success. "I became an All-American when Leslie came, not before," Crandall said , who was honored with the national recognition in 1981 and 1982. "If I didn't have a setter as quick and as smart as her, I would have gotten no awards. And I can say that without any hesitation." GOLD AND SILVER. Will pick up. Lady booters lose home opener, 2-0 By PATTI GANDRAS Collegian Sports Writer Two minor defensive mistakes re sulting in goals caused the women's soccer team to lose to Franklin and Marshall, 2-0, at Pollack Field yester day. "Franklin and Marshall is a really good team, don't get us wrong, but we outplayed them the first half,"Head Coach Sal Frenda said. "They only scored one goal, and that was more or less a defensive fluke. "We outplayed them, but there were little minor mistakes that they capitalized on," he said. The game's first goal, scored early in the first half, resulted from a lack of coverage by Penn State's defense on a Franklin and Marshall play er." We'll have to work more on that in practice, but it was basically just some confusion in the defense," Fren da said.
