PETERSBURG, Fla. Hol lis Stacy struggled to a par-72 on the final round yesterday, but still managed to ease away from the field and defend her LPGA S&H Golf Classic title with a six-stroke victory over Patty Sheehan and Deedee Lasker. Stacy, who started the day with a three-shot advantage over Janet Coles, birdied three of the first four holes on the backside 'of the 6,023- yard Pasadena Golf Club course to assume a seven-stroke advantage and then cruised to her 12th career triumph. She finished with a 72-hole total of 11-under-par 277 and was never seriously challenged by Sheehan or Laiker, who completed the second oldest tournament on the LPGA . -------- 1983-84 &counting Club Officers: ' 1 WANTe'D President: Tom Corcorbon Tonight at the brewery Vice-President: Gail Streenstra F Treasurer: Cyndie Lazur ?? Coles and two-time S&H winner JoAnne Carner, who was five shots behind after three rounds, faltered and fell back into the pack. Coles still trailed Stacy by three strokes at the nine-hole turn, but bogeyed three of four holes after taking a birdie to go 7-under-par for the tournament on No. 11. Carner continued the poor play that cost her a share of the lead Saturday, when gusting winds and steady rain caused scores to soar. 12.58 19.97 12.58 16.97 Lady golfers finish sth to close season By TIM EYSTER Collegian Sports Writer Playing in its last collegiate tournament of the season, the women's golf team shot a combined 979 total this weekend to take• fifth place in the Duke Invitational at Durham, N.C. The Lady Lions fired rounds of 320, 330, and 329 over the par 74, 5,847-yard Robert Trent Jones Course Friday, Saturday, and yesterday to finish behind tournament winner Furman, Duke, North Carolina and Troy State. The Duke Invitational was also the last collegiate tournament of the year for Penn State seniors Jane Abood, Ellen Black, Denise St. Pierre and Sandy Jaskol. The other member of the team is junior Kellie Jones. Although Penn State Assistant Coach Sam Jepsen said the team could have played worse, he said the tady Lions did not perform to the best of their ability. "(Because the seniors were) playing in their last tour nament; they were somewhat disappointed that they didn't play to their potential," Jepsen said. "(Over the first two days) the girls were playing well overall. (Yes terday) they were playing defensively all day long." The Lady Lions were in third place and only five shots off the lead after the first day of play, but began fading the rest of the way. Men • Lee Rider Twill Jeans, sizes 28-42. In individual competition, Jones led Penn State with a 243, 54-hole total and Abood followed with a 246. Black and St. Pierre were another stroke back at 247 while Jaskol shot a 262. No Penn State golfer finished in the t0p...12 individually.. Although she did not finish well, Black was among the top five leaders after the first day of play, shooting a 77 to put herself only six, shots off the lead. However, she ballooned to an 84 on the second day and finished off the tournament with an 86. "Ellen played very well Friday," Jepsen said.. "She hit a lot of the greens, at least two-putting everything. She played a very consistent round." Jepsen said the key to winning the Duke Invitational was to master the greens, which he described as very quick. "The greens are very good down here," Jepsen said. "They're the fastest greens we've played on all year. Being as undulating and quick as they are, it was very easy to lose a few strokes." • Jepsen said it was the teams that putted well that did the best in the tournament Page Marsh of North Carolina was the individual winner of the tournament, shooting a 225 overall. .11. 15.97 18.97 Au - 0, 1. - ' - '.., - ..fi.: 1 14 LIT.O 20.97 20.97 11.97 15.48 18.37 The Daily Collegian Monday, April 25, 1983-17
