It may not sound too appealing, but the stretching and straining are worth It. Nicked knuckles and bruised knees are a small price to pay for the exhilarating feeling one gets from reaching the top of a cliff. These climbers spent an afternoon exploring the rock formations behind Donation, a town 30 miles south of State College. Dave Thompson, (14th-electrical engi nearing), left, looks for a handhold above him as a scales a rock face. The harness he is wearing is tied to a rope which runs through a support at the top of the cliff and back down to a person on the ground below. Bob Rude, (15th-forest products), right, approaches the support at the top of his climb. The carabiner and webbing are attached to a tree that is sturdy enough to hold his weight should he fall. The whole set-up can be seen below. Thompson IS climbing and the rope runs from his harness through the carabiner at the top and down to the person below. The "belayer" at the bottom holds the rope from slipping if the climber falls. Special climbing shoes, below, with thin rubber soles allow the climbers to get a better grip on the rocks. Thompson, bottom left, comes to the top of his climb. Once on the top, Reyna Schlossman, (12th-horticulture), bottom right, enjoys the view from above the tree tops. / ;'~ ~ •r v ''f~• „.,,,,,.r r ...,...i' -. ;.. ; 7*.;....,".,,;:i:::':. V : 0 44 .
