18—The Daily Collegian Monday, May 3, 1982 sports briefs Netwomen fall to Princeton The women's tennis team ended a rather successful spring dual match schedule in a rather unsuccessful way Saturday. The Lady Lions fell to Ivy League champ Princeton, a team which played almost flawless tennis, 8-1, in a match that produced at least one Penn State bright spot. Despite Penn State's losing four of six singles matches in straight sets, plus two of three doubles in the minimal amount, two Lady Lions had reason to be happy about their performance as a team. The No. 1 doubles' team of Carol Dan iels and Sue Whiteside handed the out standing Tigers' duo of Joy Cummings and Pia Tamayo a 6-4, 6-4 straight sets defeat. Cummings and Tamayo are the No. 1 seeded doubles' team for the East ern Association of Intercollegiate Athlet ics for Women regionals, which takes place in Princeton, N.J. next weekend. The team seeded right behind them in the No. 2 slot is, interestingly enough, Dan iels and Whiteside. "They played awesome," Head Coach Kim Muller said of the tandem's play in the first set as they "just blew them off the court." Penn State's top doubles pair was then Netmen drop Ist home loss By JOSEPH BARRETT Collegian Sports Writer The men's tennis team took two out of three matches in a quadrangular meet at the outdoor courts this weekend, beating Mercyhurst and Bowling Green, but los ing a tough contest with Ohio University. The 6 1 / 2 -2 1 / 2 loss was Penn State's first at home this year, and was a major disappointment to Coach Holmes Cath rall. Cathrall said the match should have ended the other way. "We're not a 6 1 / 2 -2% team," Cathrall said. "We should have beaten them and we just didn't do it." With the exception of No. 1 player Bill Schillings, all the Lions had a rough time against Ohio. Schillings dropped the first set of his match with Brian Veillette, but bounced back in the next two for Penn State's only singles victory, 6-7, 7-6, 6-3. Schillings teamed up with Virgil Chris tian in doubles for the Lion's only other win of the match, to defeat Veillette and his partner, Dave Rowland, 6-4, 6-3. Tom Beckhard, Penn State's No. 3 player, said the Ohio team was good, but COLLEGIAN CLASSIFIEDADS AAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAA AAAAAAAAA aaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaa Summer sublet, 50 ft. "They (Daniels and Whiteside) know what doubles is all about," Muller said; "and they know how to play the game." "They have really matured as a dou bles' team," added Muller in regards to Daniels and Whiteside's play since being beaten by the doubles' team of Tamayo and Princeton's No. 3 singles' player Jan Shelburne at the Eastern Collegiates in October. This weekend's victory is expected to be an added plus for Daniels and White- side going into the EAIAWs, as most people are expecting a dandy of a re match. Unfortunately for the Lady Lions, the rest of Saturday's match wasn't as nice, as only Daniels and No. 6 singles' player Bessie Paragus took their opponents into the third set before being dropped. Daniels was involved in the most excit ing match of the day in her square-off against an outstanding singles' player in Joy Cummings, finally losing 6-3 in the third, while Paragus was defeated 6-1 in her finale. attributed the . Lions' loss to poor play. "They (Ohio University) were pretty tough," Beckhard said, "but most of us didn't play well against them." ' Penn State began the tournament shakily, but still managed to edge Mercy hurst Saturday afternoon, 5-4. Singles winners were Jeff Factor, Virgil Chris tian and Bill Pilardi. In the doubles, the teams of Factor-Jon Whiteside, and Schillings-Christian also won. After falling apart against Ohio Sun day morning, the Lions put it together in the afternoon and easily conquered Bowl ing Green, 8-1. Schillings, Factor, Beckhard, Chris tian and Pilardi won in singles play, and Beckhard-Pilardi, Factor-Whiteside and Schillings-Christian swept the doubles. After a full weekend of tennis, Penn State is looking at what will be its busi est, and possibly most important week of the year. The team plays three matches this • week: at home against Bucknell tomorrow, at home against Maryland on Wednesday arid at Princeton on Satur day. ECVL title By TONY SMITH Collegian Sports Writer The men's volleyball team, ranked fourth in the country, manhandled No. 8 Rutgers-Newark, 15-6, 15-8, Saturday in Pittsburgh to win the Eastern Collegiate Volleyball League Championships and earn a trip to the NCAA Championships on May 7-8. The trip will not be a long one. For the first time in the history of collegiate volleyball, the NCAA Championships will be held in the East to be specific, at Rec Hall. Penn State will face a tall order, going up against Southern Cal, the No. 3 team in the country, on Friday night. In the other match on Friday, No. 9 Ohio State will take on No. 1 UCLA. The championship and consolation matches will be held on Saturday. For now, the Lions can relish their impressive performance at the Eastern championships, a double-elimination tournament in which they failed to lose a single match. In fact, they only lost one game the entire weekend (Each match was a best two-out-of-three). And if you listen to the terminology of Men's Volleyball Coach Tom Tait, you get the impression that not only did the Lions play well, but that they could sing for the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. "We had the tempo and control, and we maintained a consistent rhythm," Tait said. Schmidt's homer paces Phi!lies to win• By The Associated Press Switch-hitting Ted Simmons belted a pair of three-run homers yesterday, one from each side of the plate, and the Brewers went on to an 11-4 rout of the Minnesota Twins. Winning pitcher Randy Lerch, 2-1, gave up five hits before being relieved in the seventh by Dwight Bernard. The Brewers jumped on Minnesota starter Al Wil liams, 2-1, in the first inning after Paul Molitor opened the game with a single and Robin Yount walked. One out later, Ben Oglivie drove in Molitor with a single and Simmons, batting left-handed, followed with his first home run of the season. Minne'sota got one back in the second on a solo homer by Gary Ward, but Milwaukee added single runs in the second, third and sixth and Simmons slammed another three-run homer in the seventh, this one batting right handed. Elsewhere in American League, Harold Baines drove in three runs with a sacrifice fly and a two-run triple and unbeaten Lamarr Hoyt became the American League's first five-game winner as the Chicago White Sox raced to a 10-3 victory over the Detroit Tigers. Using substitutes throughout the match, the Lions were able to defeat NJIT 16-14, 15-9. Tait's use of his entire bench is some thing he has not done much all season. Why now, in the Eastern championships? "We wanted to establish some depth early on in the tournament," Tait said, "and we felt we could do it against NJIT." . In the first game, the Lions had 14 kills, and eight errors. Scott Treser led the team with five kills, followed by Paul Hunczak and Bob Palka with three each. In the second game, Penn State again had 14 kills but cut its errors down to five. Treser again was tops for the Lions with four kills. Tait expressed satisfaction with the play of Treser and the bench as a whole, and said that NJIT (although not a vol leyball powerhouse) caused a few prob lems. Once again Tait spoke like a man who has had as much experience in the field of music as Michael Tilson-Thomas or Webster Lewis. "They were very unorthodox and er ratic," Tait said, "and they had no con sistent rhythm." After the NJIT win, the Lions defeated Princeton, a first-round winner over George Mason. This time Penn State used its starting lineup, and as a result, Eddie Murray hit two doubles, drove in a run and scored one and Scott McGregor recorded his 10th straight victory over California as the Baltmore Orioles defeated the Angels 6-4. Dave Winfield drove in the tie-breaking run with a line drive off the third base bag in the eighth inning and Roy Smalley added a two-run single, giving the New York Yankees a 4-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners. Dennis Eckersley scattered eight hits for his second shutout of the season and the Boston Red Sox rode a five-run first inning to a 6-0 victory over Texas; the Rangers' ninth consecutive defeat. Jeff Newman cracked a two-run homer and Jeff Burroughs scored twice to support the four-hit pitching of Mike Norris as the Oakland A's defeated the Cleve land Indians 5-2. Lloyd Moseby and Willie Upshaw drove in two runs apiece and Toronto's Jim Clancy outdueled Kansas City's Dennis Leonard, giving the Blue Jays a 7-5 victory over the Royals. In the National League, Mike Krukow hurled a four hitter for his second shutout and Mike Schmidt slammed his first home run of the season as the with Mon. the final score was 15-4, 15-4. The Lions had 12 kills and two errors in the first game; eight kills and two errors in the second. Mike "Harpo" Guyon led the Lions with four kills in the first game, while co-captain Mark Kraynik had three in the second. Penn State also had nine team blocks in the match. "We played a very crisp and smooth match," Tait said. "The execution was smooth; they blocked well and picked up Princeton's blocks real well. And I was also pleaied with the serving. We had only one serving error in the match and that was in the first game." In the meantime, Rutgers-Newark considered the only other team that had a shot at winning Easterns had beaten East Stroudsburg in two straight games and defeated host Pitt in three games to earn the right to play Penn State on Saturday. "The match (against Pitt) was pretty close," Tait said. "Pitt could have won it if they hadn't made some key mistakes." The first match between Rutgers-New ark and Penn State also turned out to be pretty close, with the Lions losing the first game, 15-11, before coming back to win the next two, 15-11, 15-9. The first game of that match appeared to be a repeat of the first game the Lions played against UCLA last weekend at the Dos Equis Classic. Against Rutgers (like UCLA) the match was tied in the late goings (at 11) before Rutgers (like UCLA) finally took control to win. SUMMER SUBLET 1 OR 2 Females. E. College-close! Joe Niekro and Randy Moffitt combined on a five hitter and Jose Cruz and Art Howe knocked in two runs apiece as the Houston Astros beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-2. Right-hander Bob Walk hurled a five-hitter and re ceived 12-hit support from his Atlanta teammates as the Braves routed the Chicago Cubs 10-3. , . St. Louis left-hander John Martin pitched a no-hitter ti for six innings and Keith Hernandez and Gene Tenace drove in three runs apiece to lead the Cardinals to a 6-4 victory over the Cincinnati Reds and a split of their doubleheader. The Reds won the opener 5-1 as Eddie._ Milner and Ron Oester, the first two men in the Cincinnati order, accounted for six hits and four runs. Tim Wallach drove in four runs with his first homer of , the season and a pair of singles to lead a 17-hit Montreal attack as the Expos riddled Los Angeles 13-1 behind ohe five-hit pitching of Steve Rogers. The third game was also tightly con tested, at least for a while. But.. . "After the score was 8-7 in our favor, we took control of the match," Tait said. "Bruce (Van Horn) had some good one on-one blocks, which really helped us out." - So the Lions were victorious. But it wasn't over yet. Since the tournament was double-elimination, a lot of people expected a rematch between the two teams in the finals. And, of course, it .happened. The Lions eliminated George Mason from contention, 15-3, 15-10. Rutgers- Newark also won, earning the right to play Penn State again. However, its second try was not even as successful as its first, as it fell to the Lions in two straight games.
