A successful Oreseason has been 1 completed :and ail abundance of talent unveiled. At long last, the women's field 1 hockey team takes its first steps on the 1 road that: will hopefully lead them to Washington, D.C., and the national I tournament. i •• 1 41 " The road to Washington is a long and difficult one and at 3:30 this afternoon, / the Lady Lions, who are ranked second nationally, make their first stop, in Lewisburg to hook sticks with Bucknell. "The girls are raring to go for some hockey," Penn State - coach Gillian 4i, Rattray said, "We've had a lot of time to , / work on set plays and conditioning, but 1 now the girls are ready to play 1 something that counts." 1 • In the team's only competition of the season the abbreviated scrimmages . in the Lady Lion Invitational Penn State swept through the two-day event 0,0 taking five victories and not allowing a single goal thanks to a swarming 1 defense and flawless goaltending by 1, junior Jeannie Fissinger. i • But that was nine days ago and in the , , , meantime, the team has had no one else 1 to play but themselves. , 4) "We were kind of letting up after ' scrimmaging the J.V. for so long," senior sweeper Wendy Emery said. "After a while you get to know their i moves and stop looking for things. This lisn't good because in a game you have to be alert all the time." I* To create more of a competitive at- SPOR FALL JA from mosphere, Rattray staged_ a Blue and White gameind spread the talent evenly among the two teams. The teams were led by co-captains Emery and senior back Nancy Deal. "The game really helped us a lot," Emery said. "We were having some problems getting up for regular prac tices, but Friday's scrimmage really created a lot of excitement." The excitement should peak against the Bisons today. Last year, Penn State shell-shocked Bucknell 5.0 on the strength of three goals by former Lady Lion-turned-assistant coach, Charlene Moretti They • are not, however, ex pecting an easy time of it this afternoon. "I'm really not sure what to expect from them," Rattray said. "They have a new coach .in ( former field hockey All- American) Sally Starr and with her knowledge of the, game, she should have a very exciting team." Starr, a four-year starter at Ursinus and assistant coach at the University of New Hampshire last year, has eight returning starters to this year's lineup. Although high scorer Karin Wagner has graduated, senior forwards Betsy Levan and Kathy Kline lend their experience. The Lady Lions will go with the same squad that, started in the Invitational. The only change has sophomore Candy Finn on the left wing instead of the link. "I believe we were asking too much of Candy too soon," Rattray said. "( Senior) Deb Malone will play the link. She has a lot of experience at that position." 2344725 start trek to nationals Sophomore forward Jan Snyder (16), charging to get back to defense, will lead the highly-touted Lady Lions against Bucknell at 3:30 this afternoon in Lewis burg.
