M —The Daily Collegian Monday, Feb. 12,197!) Penn State Sports Roundup leers clinch division title The ice hockey team ended the regular season in first place in its division with a 9-1-2 record by tying Delaware 3-3 and beating Villanova 5-4 this past weekend. Although second place Villanova, 6-3, has three more games on its schedule, there is no way it can win the title. Lion captain Jerry Fry said that although Penn State had the potential to finish first, it was not sure of the seasonal outcome until Saturday night. “It all came down to beating Villanova,” Fry said. Lion coach Clayton John said this was the best season the team ever had, and that the saddest thing about it was that the student body really never had a chance to see them play because it did not have a home rink. John also said that the team made the best of “situations that are adverse to good hockey ” “I don’t know which was worse,” he said, “practicing in the snow or making such long trips to the games all the time. “But despite all the hardships, the team still played hockey the way it was intended to be played.” In the Delaware game, John Grainda scored Penn State’s first goal at 13:30 of I the first period. The second goal was at t 14:40 of the middle period by Greg ; Smith. Thom Horgas, Penn Statb’s and i the league’s leading scorer with 33 | points, scored the team’s final goal in the f third period. - !
