THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 1963 Newcombe Administrative One of-the top behind the scenes men in athletics at Penn State leaves his post this week to become the new Dean of Admissions at Lycoming Col'Xge. Few people know the name of Bob Newcombe when they hear it but in more than a small way he has helped to make Penn State a sports power. He is one reason why the Lions have been able to get top athletes to come to Mt. Nittany and then remain here. As Administrative Assistant to the Director of Athletics, it was Newcombe's job to handle tutor ing for the athletes, check out future prospects for academic ranking in high school and many times be the "mouthpiece" of the Lion coaching staffs. In the short two - and - a - half. years that he spent at State, he gained' a name for himself as a gentlemen and an ardent sports man. Newcombe came to State from Bucknell where he served on the admissions staff. He had previous ly worked at Juniata College. His main job at the University was to check out prospective athletes for admission to the school. However, many coaches and players will tell you that he was at his best speaking to high school coaches and players. "He really made an impression on me" one WPIAL football coach said. "His 'class' is what made me feel State was a good school for my boy. He gave me only the facts and didn't try to go over board_ selling the school." Newcombe handled over 500 football applications a year, in ad dition to numerous other sports f k -A- —for EQuality s Go Paperbacks Drop In and See —the best in the NEW BOORS just in! all kinds of And don't forget the !P's—sl.2ss literature • Nittany News Next To The Corner Room Resigns Post By JIM BUKATA Assistant Sports Editor applications. His file in Rec Hall is complicated but has every name in it from Aak to Zzkowitz. He also provided tutors for any athlete on aid that needed help. Newcombe will be missed by the University. He will not be easily replaced for it is hard to find a man with as much poise and in telligence as he had. A possible successor grid line coach Tor Toretti has been sug gested. Whoever it is, he will have a big pair of shoes to fill. Seems impossible, yet Theta Chi did it Tuesday evening in Roc Hall when it crushed Sigma Tau Gamma, 102-12. The total broke the previous high in an intramural game of ' 101 set by Edinboro in 1951. At' that time however, the games were only 20 minutes long. The record breaking point total came against a team that had sur rendered 81 points against Tau Kappa Epsilon two weeks ago. THETA CHI. according to 1M director • Dutch Sykes, used a full court press the entire game and repeatedly stole the ball and scored easy layups. John Berle, a former Penn State freshman basketball player, led all scorers with 33 points. Bill Funk added 28 others and Joe Simonetta chipped in with 22. Edinboro, the previous record holders were two-time independ ent champions and lost only one game in three years. That came in their senior year when they were beaten by the Sinkers. Despite the overwhelming vic tory, Theta Chi stands only a slim chance of winning its league title. Tau Kappa Epsilon is un beaten and owns a win over Theta Chi.—By Jim Bukala ^ ~ \ ~~~~6 ~ ~ %~ ~ ~ A~ ~ ~ ' ~ ~ ~ A ~~~~~, Ay~ `~ ~ ~ ~~ k~\ ~ a~~ ~ ~~ ~ ~ ~ ~ lam± ! o'4o •• • • •.•• • • •• • ••••••••t• '4.3.WW•334*.4 1 }1g.q.
